This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by performing administrative and clinical duties in an outpatient setting including limited medication administration in the outpatient setting.
Job Duties
  • Administers oral, SubQ and IM medications under the direct supervision of an RN
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of medication purpose, side effects and administration procedure
  • Performs accurate measurement of patient statistics to include vitals, height and weight
  • Manages room turnover and patient flow
  • Collects health history and med list
  • Escribes orders
  • Prepares patient for physician's exam
  • Instructs patients as directed by the RN or physician
  • Performs front offices duties including telephone, reception, medical records and scheduling
  • Practices standard precautions
  • Maintains inventory in rooms and orders office and clinical supplies and instruments
Department Specific Duties
  • Prepare charts for upcoming surgeries by locating H&P, consults, etc. via Epic and/or calling clinics to retrieve them
  • Demonstrates and develops skills necessary to interact with the patient population of infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric
  • Interacts with and adapts are necessary when dealing with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
  • Adapts to changing priorities and works as needed and directed by the charge nurse 
  • Reviews testing results; communicates with providers on abnormal results
  • Learns and understand surgeon and anesthesia protocols
  • Collaborates effectively with PASE team
  • Documents each phone encounter within Epic system
  • Restocks interview rooms per department protocol
  • Schedules PASE appointments with patients and/or clinic staff
  • Checks-in patients as they present for their PASE interview
  • Provides patients with directions and communication about PASE appointments and upcoming surgeries
  • Assists and orients to other roles in the department such as Unit Secretary as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of administrative and clinical functions in a physician office setting
Professional Experience
  • One year experience working in a medical office setting preferred
  • Education sufficient to obtain Medical Assistant certification
Licensure, Certification, Registration
  • Certified Medical Assistant required
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse & Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required.  Employee must submit certification of completed training prior to start or transfer date

Location: Mercy Medical Center - Cedar Rapids · Surgery Center
Schedule: Full Time, Day, 0800-1630 M-F; No weekends or holidays
