Application Developer - Orders

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Health Care Information Systems is seeking an Application Developer to design and/or modify components of complex clinical application systems. This person will work in partnership with the Orders team, Willow team, Epic, Subject Matter Experts and Health Care Information Systems to support strategic planning, daily operations, and assist with technology planning to maximize user and organizational effectiveness.

Primary duties include:

  • Workflow analysis, optimization, application build, testing and implementation of Epic System software related to Orders management application. 
  • Monitoring production issues, testing special updates, and system documentation.

The ideal candidate will have experience acting as a contact for the support, configuration, and development of at least one enterprise application; experience working with end-users to define system requireme nts and understand business needs; ability to write technical specifications for complex integrated systems; and basic project management skills. All positions require use of a pager and providing some 24 x 7 on-call support.

  • Salary: $53,000 to commensurate – Paygrade 4B

Education Required:
Bachelor’s in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and related application development/support experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in the development and/or support of applications used by non-technical customers to support and enhance healthcare workflows processes typically 3-5 years of experience for an Application Developer role.
  • Experience contributing to an integrated information system implementation cycle through areas such as design, workflow analysis, build, training, implementation, testing and support
  • Demonstrated experience working with end-users to define system requirements, understand business needs and convert business requirements into functional/technical specifications for complex integrated systems build
  • Demonstrated ability using programming languages and/or tools for customizing vendor application software
  • Experience working with vendors to analyze system and integration requirements
  • Experience communi cating technical information effectively to technical and non-technical staff at the verbal, written and presentation levels
  • Demonstrated job-related experience and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting an EMR in an ambulatory or hospital setting
  • Experience with any of the following: orders or medication management in a Healthcare setting, pharmacy, ambulatory, inpatient or procedural workflows
  • Clinical experience related but not limited to the following: certified pharmacy technician, nursing, or medical assistant
  • Epic certification related but not limited to the following: Inpatient Orders, Order Transmittal, EpicCare Ambulatory, EpicCare Inpatient, or Willow Inpatient
  • Experience collaborating with technical and non-technical staff on system implementation projects
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with basic project management
  • Proven ability to write application test scripts
