University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics department of Health Care Information Systems is seeking a Senior Application Developer to provide technical leadership, direction, and technical support for the development, configuration and ongoing maintenance of EpicCare Clinical Documentation and Epic ASAP software modules. This position will support the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics’ Community Connect program which extends our Epic applications to regional hospitals and clinics.

Core job duties include:

  • Collaborate with application owners and stakeholders to identify critical functional requirements for new or revised applications.
  • Recommend technical design and procedures for new or revised applications.
  • Review and analyze system problems to identify solutions and/or make appropriate referrals.
  • Develop and maintain detailed project plans associated with system development, deployment, and ongoing support.
  • Develop and maintain documentation to ensure recovery capability, as well as satisfactory and stable performance of the platform(s) and all applications and processes.
  • May provide administrative and/or functional supervision over assigned staff (Senior level)
  • Provide some 24x7 on-call support.
  • Travel to customer sites for sustained periods of time to support application implementation, upgrade, and or optimization.


  • Salary: $65,000 to commensurate – Paygrade 5B

Education Required:
Bachelor’s in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and related application development/support experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in the development and/or support of applications used by non-technical customers to support and enhance business processes, typically 5-7 years for Senior Developer in leadership roles including experience with programming tools and a comprehensive understanding of database technologies.
  • Experience contributing to the support, configuration and development of at least one Epic-specific healthcare enterprise application
  • Experience working with application owners and/or vendors to analyze system and integration requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with basic project management
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with technical and non-technical staff
  • Demonstrated job-related experience and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting an EHR in a rural ambulatory or hospital setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with any of the following workflows: ambulatory or inpatient clinical documentation; emergency department or ancillary services such as social work, respiratory therapy or rehabilitation services
  • Epic certification(s) related but not limited to the following: EpicCare Ambulatory, EpicCare Inpatient, EpicCare Procedure Orders, Epic ASAP
  • Experience collaborating with technical and non-technical staff on system implementation projects
  • Proven ability to write application test scripts
  • Experience troubleshooting HL7 interfaces and/or device integration
