Environmental Aide- Nursing Home Personal Care Support

Purpose

Under on-site supervision of the Charge Nurse, the Environmental Aide performs indirect resident services which support the implementation of resident care plans and contribute to a safe, clean, pleasant environment. Functions within strictly defined instructions with little latitude for variation or change.

Qualifications

  • Functional literacy in spoken and written English.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Complete assignments timely, completely and accurately.

Essential Functions

  • Distribute ice/water, pitchers, trays, and glasses to residents’ bedsides.
  • Strip and remake beds.
  • Observe condition of mattresses, beds, linens, bedroom furnishings and report to Charge Nurse those in need of repair or replacement.
  • Observe waste disposal procedures in accordance with facility policy; follow directions.
  • Assist in the dining room with menus and hand wipes and documenting meal intake,  provide supervision of residents.
  • Follow material safety data sheets (MSDS).
  • Identify and report any equipment malfunctions to supervisor.
  • When called upon, assist in transporting residents in wheelchairs to meals or activity areas and cleaning dining tables/chairs after meals.
  • Use supplies properly and efficiently.
  • Properly use and care for equipment.
  • Use equipment, tools, supplies, and chemicals according to instructions, observing safety precautions and protective measures.
  • Use chemicals and supplies according to instructions and with proper protective equipment; report any problems immediately.
  • Clean equipment used by residents, such as commodes and wheelchairs, whirlpool, beds and bedrails.
  • Empty trash containers, replace liners as appropriate and dispose of trash in proper receptacle.
  • Perform general cleaning tasks such as sweeping, dusting, washing windows, vacuuming and shampooing carpets, cleaning upholstery, cleaning light fixtures, cleaning bathroom fixtures.
  • Dispense soap, paper towels, tissue and other supplies to resident rooms and general use areas.
  • Neatly fold/hang/stack items from dryer specific to different types of items, fabric content, size; recognize items in need of ironing and irons them.
  • Gather soiled laundry from various locations throughout the facility and transports to laundry area according to established procedures and schedules.
  • Sort soiled laundry by color, fabric, type, etc., and prepares for washing by pre-soaking/spotting as needed and according to established procedures.

Delegation of Authority

Authority is delegated to the individual in this position to:

  • Notify supervisor when supplies are needed.
  • Notify supervisor when equipment is in need of repair.
  • Notify supervisor when linen and residents’ clothing are in need of repair.
