University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Health Care Information Systems is seeking a Lead Application Developer to provide administrative and technical leadership for the project team enhancing and supporting the Epic Grand Central applications including Admission Discharge Transfer (ADT), Bed Planning, Transfer Center, Patient Transport, Environmental Services (EVS), BCAWeb Data Entry, and Rover mobile applications for EVS and Transport.

Core duties include:
• Provide technical leadership, direction, and technical support for the development, configuration and ongoing maintenance of Epic applications.
• Collaborate with administrative and clinical application owners and stakeholders to identify critical functional requirements for new or revised applications.
• Develop technical design and procedures for new or revised applications.
• Lead the review and analysis of system problems to identify solutions and/or make appropriate referrals.
• Develop and maintain detailed project plans associated with system development, deployment, and ongoing support.
• Develop standards for documentation to ensure recovery capability, as well as satisfactory and stable performance of the platform(s) and all applications and processes.
• Provide administrative and/or functional supervision over assigned staff.
• Provide some 24x7 on-call support.

Education Required:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and related application development/support experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in the development and/or support of applications used by non-technical customers to support and enhance business processes, typically 7-10 years for Lead Developers in leadership roles, including experience with programming tools and a comprehensive understanding of database technologies
  • Experience acting as the primary contact for the support, configuration and development of at least one healthcare enterprise application or area of functionality
  • Experience working with end-users to define system requirements and understand business needs and convert business requirements into functional/technical specifications for complex integrated systems build
  • Experience working with application owners and/or vendors to analyze system and integration requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with basic project management
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with technical and non-technical staff
  • Demonstrated job-related experience and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in the management of application development staff (functional or administrative)
  • Demonstrated experience supporting any of the following system configuration/workflows in an ambulatory or hospital setting: Admission Discharge Transfer (ADT) or inpatient workflows, Bed Planning, or Registration systems
  • Epic certification related but not limited to the following: Grand Central (ADT), Prelude, or EpicCare Inpatient
  • Experience collaborating with technical and non-technical resources on system implementation projects
  • Proven ability to write application test scripts
  • Familiarity with health care revenue cycle practices
  • Experience working with HL7 interfaces
  • Experience working with the Mumps programming language (M code)
