Description of Position:

Provide a “snapshot” or the principal purpose or focus of the position, consisting of no more than three to five sentences.  This summary should provide enough information to differentiate the major function and activities of the position from those of other positions.

Provides diagnostic patient care services through the preparation, measurement, and administration of radioactive isotopes while using scintillation cameras/computers, radiation-measuring equipment, and related medical equipment in accordance with those procedures, acts and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experience and has demonstrated competency. This position requires application of clinical, cooperative and independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative to complete the variety of technical procedures.

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

·         Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic nuclear medicine exams in accordance to clinic policy and procedure for adult patients; outpatient status.

·         Demonstrate competence of the radioactive materials license, the authorized users, and the limits of the license.

·         Prepare and administer radioactive pharmaceuticals to patients to obtain diagnostic images and quantitative/functional data in accordance to the radioactive materials license(s).

·         Operate scintillation cameras/computers and radiation-measuring probes and detectors to produce images and graphic test data for interpretation by physicians.

·         Draft procedural reporting for final physician interpretation.  Initiate billing for procedures performed.

·         Perform, evaluate, and document quality control, proficiency testing, and quality assurance procedures.

·         Completes and maintains accurate documentation related to the performance of duties.

·         Participate in procedure updates and the development of new procedures as needed.

·         Processes and analyzes nuclear medicine data and communicates findings to the appropriate health care professional(s). 

·         Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.  

·         Participates in the laboratory accreditation process.

·         Participates in department quality improvement processes.

Development and Patient Education

·         Provides individualized education for patients and their families, recognizing and adapting to any special needs.             .                 

·         Coordinates work schedule with team members and Diagnostic Imaging Manager to assure workload coverage.

·         Assumes responsibility for the safety and the mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the care of the Nuclear Medicine Technologist.

·         Organizes daily work schedule and performs clerical duties with accuracy.    

·         Maintain and recognize malfunctioning equipment, perform minor troubleshooting, and initiate repair service when warranted.

·         Be aware of what is happening in clinic/department and the organization by attending clinic/department meetings, reading emails and regularly checking information on the organization’s intranet site.

·         Maintain regular and consistent attendance at work.

·         Maintain compliance with State of Iowa, OSHA, and Safety and Risk Management guidelines.

·         Maintain compliance with Personnel policies and procedures.

·         Monitor environmental conditions in order to secure protected health information.

·         Behave in a manner consistent with all Corporate Compliance and HIPAA policies and procedures.

·         Demonstrate initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations.

·         Travel to non-primary clinic location(s) to execute job functions as outlined in the job description. 

·         Perform other duties as requested by Clinic Administrator and/or Diagnostic Imaging Manager to facilitate the smooth and effective operations of the office.

Minimum Requirements

Graduate of an accredited nuclear medicine program.

Bachelor’s degree in Radiologic Sciences or Health Science






Minimum of one year of experience in nuclear medicine preferred.








·         Professional Licensure for State of Iowa

·         Current registry in nuclear medicine through the NMTCB and/or ARRT.

·         BCLS

·         Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Nuclear Cardiology certification (NCT) through the NMTCB






·         Experience with scintillation cameras/computers, uptake probes/wells, and dose calibrators, preferred.

·         Able to write, read, comprehend and speak fluent English.

·         Strong verbal and written communication skills.
