Overview

 

Successfully functions as an Extracorporeal Life Support Specialist as defined by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), and hospital Policy and Procedures. Provides care for Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) Patients under the direction of the Medical Director, ECLS.  

 

Successful performance contributes to a holistic approach to the delivery of services, quality patient/family care and a high level of satisfaction from patients and families.

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

  • Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient’s care.
  • Audits patient records to ensure accuracy of patient care documentation and associated billing.

·         Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgment, and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.

·         Utilizes a holistic approach (considering psychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area.

·         Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare providers and holding them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care.

·         Consistently delivers high quality care while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills in accordance with established policies and procedures and standards of care.

·         Collects data from record review to ensure that standardized care is being provided consistently to improve patient outcomes, regulatory compliance and satisfaction.

  • This position may be assigned a specific mission to address in an emergency situation to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the Hospital Emergency Incident Command System.  Situations of a critical nature may require an individual to perform multiple tasks until additional support can be obtained.

·         Assesses needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Requirements

Education:

 

 

Graduate of accredited program.

Bachelor’s in Respiratory Care or Health Sciences related field of study or BSN.

Experience:

 

 

 

Must have at least three years of clinical experience, at least two of which must be in direct clinical critical care.

 

License(s)/Certification(s):

 

 

 

 

Must be board certified in either Adult Critical Care (ACCS) or Neonatal/Pediatric Respiratory Care (NPS) by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) OR have earned the Critical Care Registered Nurse credential (CCRN) from the AACN. This requirement must be satisfied within ONE year of hire as ECLS Specialist.

 

Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license.

 

Must be a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) OAND conform to the following:

  • Maintain Basic Life Saving (BLS)
  • Maintain Chain of Response in Emergency training (CORE)Obtain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within ONE year of being hired as ECLS Specialist.
  • Must take and pass the Trauma Care after Resuscitation (TCAR) course within ONE year of being hired as ECLS Specialist.
  • Attend and satisfy all the requirements of a formal course of study that is based upon the guidelines and recommendations set forth by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), designed by the ECLS Program Coordinator and approved by the ECLS Program Medical Director.
  • Complete (40) hours of supervised ECLS case management experience and on completion earn a satisfactory performance rating on an ECLS competency validation verified by the ECLS Supervisor and Respiratory Care Manager.

 

Upon completion of the above, the candidate will be awarded the designation of ECLS Specialist

As our ECLS Program matures and moves into other clinical patient populations, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) may also be required by ALL ECLS Specialists.

 

Registered Nurse issued by the appropriate licensing authority for the state of Iowa.

Demonstrates clinical competency and technical knowledge in the delivery and management of Extracorporeal Life Support including initiation of ECLS, circuit management, anticoagulation management, delivery of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) medications and blood products as needed, and continuous monitoring of appropriate physiologic data.

 

Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations.

 

May be required to initiate Extracorporeal Cardiac Life Support (ECLS) in unique locations. As our program matures this may include pediatric and neonatal clinical areas as well.

 

Must be capable of priming circuits, changing circuits, adapting circuits as needed, and transporting ECLS patients in-house and out-of-house.

 

May be required to assist with data collection.

 

Must be capable of managing ECLS patients via a 1:1 or 1:2 Specialist to Patient ratio.

 

Will be required to take regular call.

 

Must be willing to serve as a resource to other hospital services (nursing, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, etc.), and the surrounding community by way of education and outreach.

 

May be asked to present at quality committees of the hospital.
