This positon can be hired as either Full or Part Time and can work in either Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and/or Dubuque.


Clinical expert to patients and their families who consider themselves at high risk for a genetic disorder. Works with other members of the health care team to ensure patients are evaluated for genetic dispositions per national guidelines. As a health care professional, interprets and provides clear and comprehensive information about the risk of medical conditions that may have a genetic contribution and ascertains the usefulness of genetic technologies for individuals and families, facilitating an informed decision-making process that elicits and respects the spectrum of personal beliefs and values. Assists with the development of policies, procedures, community education and patient educational materials as requested.


Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Patient Education

·        Provides an effective screening process to identify appropriate clients for genetic counseling and provides support to each patient who has a positive or negative genetic test.

·        Provides appropriate education for the client, the family, health care team and community support systems regarding genetic counseling. This includes both pre and post consultation.

·        Establishes and maintains a clinical documentation system for genetic counseling office and develops effective clinical communication system with patients, community, referring physicians and physician champions.

·        Provides comprehensive genetic counseling to individuals and families deemed high risk by obtaining genetic, somatic and germline testing and makes proper recommendations based on interpretation of test and adopting guidelines.  

·        Coordinates providers responsible for furnishing genetic services needed by the patient with the help of the outpatient services manager as well as all payment sources that may reimburse for those services.

·        Develops and maintains a library of resources for patients, family and staff regarding genetic counseling issues.

·        Participates in data collection to integrate fiscal efficiency with high quality and continuity of care and provides monthly/quarterly statistical data and reports to help identify areas for process improvement.

·        Develops standards, policies, procedures, and protocols to support genetic patients.

·        Seeks out and provides leadership opportunities in public speaking, marketing, and research related to genetic disorders and the available services and programs provided.

·        Perform complicated risk calculations; evaluate medical, family and psychosocial histories; distill genetic and psychosocial information; participate in diagnostic evaluations and develop effective case management plans.

·        Convey detailed genetic information to diverse audiences clearly and concisely while bridging cultural, socioeconomic and educational differences.

·        Utilize an empathetic approach to identify a patient’s concerns, clarify beliefs and values, promote preventative health measures and facilitate informed decision-making.

·        Maintain integrity by following the ethical, legal and philosophical principles and values of the profession.

·        Assists in working with insurance companies to facilitate coverage of genetic testing.

·        Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse.  Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff.  Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Minimum Requirements

Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited program required.





Two years of experience in genetic counseling.






Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Certification as a Board-Certified Genetic Counsel (CGC) from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).




Active Candidate Status with intent to complete certification within the next available examination cycle.






Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

Basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail and web browser.


Professionalism and relationship management.


Ability to handle multiple interruptions and changing priorities.


Expert in the management of genetic disorders and able to effectively communicate this information to the community and patients.







Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
