Overview

Position is eligible for remote/work from home within UnityPoint Health regions: IA, IL, WI.

 

The System Engineer Enterprise Monitoring will be responsible for the implementation, configuration, and support for monitoring of the infrastructure and application environments. The engineer will work with others to design, build, implement, and support the monitoring configurations; will own the monitoring platform; alerting mechanisms and escalation; train other operations and IT associates on the monitoring tools usability; and overall framework to support the management of infrastructure and applications running across multiple internal and external facing data center environments. The position requires an individual with an overall knowledge of IT logical, technical, and monitoring architecture principles, as well as solid interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

Enterprise Monitoring Duties

  • Supporting current and potential enterprise monitoring solutions and tools (SolarWinds, SCORCH, others)
  • Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts (SME) for SAN storage, mail, backups, virtualization, networking and information protection.
  • Create and maintain operational dashboards for both real-time and trend views for multiple levels of users (Operations, Engineering, Development, Business and Executive)
  • Develop and manage cross-platform monitoring architecture for virtualized compute, networks and storage infrastructure and develop rules, alerts, and notifications in a heterogeneous environment.
  • Research new technologies and products related to end-to-end application and infrastructure monitoring for engineering new monitoring solutions.
  • Provide day-to-day administration support of tools the team supports and ensure the availability, performance, and security of the overall monitoring platform.
  • Develop and manage components of Application Performance Monitoring (APM) and develop rules, alerts and notifications.
  • Responsible for development and maintenance of test plans, including the assurance of change management compliance
  • Provide input into preparation of project plans
  • Participates in establishing and preparing departmental goals, standards, procedures, and instructions which contribute to the effectiveness of the department in accordance with organizational goals
  • Participates in 3-year roadmaps for functional area of responsibility
  • Develop availability and capacity monitoring and reporting process for all systems and applications.
  • Ensures operating and service level agreements for department are industry appropriate, adhered to, and assists in any action that needs to be taken to adjust.
  • Provide night and weekend on-call coverage as scheduled – May assume additional on-call responsibilities as directed by the supervisor
  • Provides leadership to other staff and planning to ensure effective, efficient operations, optimizing performance and continually improving quality.
  • Actively participates in operation improvement efforts related to standards and processes of the entire department.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining policies, procedures, checklists, and guidelines that are best practice for all department functions to support all UPH and affiliate sites and locations.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.  Equivalent education and work experience will be accepted only if previous experience applies to specific systems.

Experience:

  • Requires at least 3 years of experience in monitoring with additional experience in systems, network, or application administration.
  • Preferred working experience in SCOM and SolarWinds
  • Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare industry systems is highly desired

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to understand and apply guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Strong computer skills including intermediate to advanced knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong technical experience of an application hosting IT environment (including web servers, database, virtualization, storage, load balancers, firewalls)
  • Strong technical experience with industry standard (SNMP, agent based, remote polling) monitoring technologies, with the proven capability to implement and support complex environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of server, networking, backup, storage, power, and virtualization tools and concepts as they relate to monitoring
  • Strong working knowledge of network protocols and services (TCP/IP, SNMP, SSH, DNS)
  • Strong working knowledge in Linux and Windows systems administration
  • Understanding of underlying application platforms (IIS, SQL, LDAP, Active Directory)
  • Strong understanding and knowledge of ITIL framework best practices for IT Service Management
  • Experience in multiple scripting languages is preferred (PowerShell, Perl)
  • Experience defining, creating, and supporting monitoring dashboards for various levels of users and providing reporting and status information clearly and at actionable levels.
