The purpose of the Endoscopy technician is to assist with the preparation, cleaning, and maintenance of endoscopy equipment. The endoscopy technician will maintain general stocking of the endoscopy rooms. Under the direct supervision of an RN, the endoscopy technician may assist with basic patient cares. The endoscopy technician will work with the physician and the RN as a member of the direct patient care team before, during, and after the endoscopy procedure.


DIRECT PATIENT CARE - The Endoscopy Technician may assist the circulating RN in meeting the patient's individual needs.

  1. Strives to meet the patient's needs promptly and efficiently.
  2. Prepares patients positions as prescribed by the physician.
  3. Completes skin preparations as designed.
  4. Assist in transfer of patients (cart to procedure table, procedure table to cart, cart to wheelchair, etc.).
  5. May collect data for the RN (vital signs, history, etc.).



  1. Communicates effectively with patients, families and colleagues.
  2. Introduces self to patients, families and colleagues.
  3. Maintains friendly, courteous and responsible interpersonal communication patterns.
  4. Verbally presents factual and concise information when turning over post procedure care to responsible nursing staff.
  5. Documents according to established service and center guidelines on the patient's medical record.
  6. Directs concerns regarding patient care and potential risk situations to the Director of Nursing, Perioperative Supervisor, Pre/Post Charge Nurse, or responsible staff nurses.
  7. Directs concerns regarding center policies to the Director of Nursing and/or Perioperative Supervisor.
  8. Respects patients' confidentiality in all communication.
  9. Attends staff meetings and participates in center committees as appropriate.



  1. Initiates actions and follows directions of responsible staff nurses designed to prevent, minimize and/or correct potential or actual risk situations to patients and/or staff.
  2. Knowledgeable of aseptic technique.
  3. Complies with infection control, electrical and environmental safety policies and procedures with established protocols for fire, disaster, sever strorms and tornadoes.
  4. Maintains current BLS certification.
  5. Presents problems and potential risk situations to the Director of Nursing and/or the Perioperative Supervisor through verbal and written report methods (e.g., variance reports).
  6. Maintains safe, clean patient care environment.
  7. Assists in unit housekeeping responsibilities. 


  1. Assumes responsibility for growth through participation in education programs.
  2. Attends department in-services.
  3. Utilizes and shares information from in-services, reading and workshops.



The endoscopy technician is a graduate from an accredited high school or equivalence program. Qualifications that will be considered for the position include: college course work, preferably in the healthcare field; satisfactory completion of an approved nursing assistance course; previous work or military experience in healthcare. Previous hospital experience is helpful and preferred for this position.



The technician is directly accountable to the Perioperative Supervisor. While participating in patient care activities during scheduled work hours, the technician is responsible for reporting to and consulting with staff nurses in conjunction with charge nurses and the perioperative supervisor. The technician maintains communication and cooperative relationships with fellow associates.
