Overview

Description of Position:

The role of the Night/Weekend Resource Nurse is to support and develop new graduate nurses on the night shift during their first year as a nurse. Responsibilities include: round on all first year nurses each night shift, respond to requests from participating nurses for emergent or high risk procedures, mentor and provide support to new nurses in their work environment,  provide real time education to new nurses, evaluate new nurse performance, and communicate with department leadership and professional practice on opportunities to enhance onboarding experiences.

Team Member Development

·         Assist with competency training to ensure staff development needs for new nurses are met.

·         Serves as a resource in the assessment planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care provided by new nursing staff.

·         Supports new nurses with development of professional skills, work efficiency, and documentation in EMR.

·         Provides coaching at the elbow to new nurses on key nursing initiatives (ie IPASS, whiteboards, etc).

·         Serves as a role model in creating a positive work environment that contributes to safety and positive clinical outcomes.

·         Debrief new nurses after critical events.  

·         Evaluates new nurse’s performance and collaborates with department nursing leadership with feedback in areas for improvement.

Patient Care- Clinical

·         Develops and implements an individualized care plan according to current standards of nursing practice, evidence based practice and hospital protocol/ procedures.

·         Integrates patients and family teaching throughout the hospitalization related to the care plan.

·         Administers medication and nursing treatments within scope of practice.

·         Performs admission and shift assessments per specific departmental standards. Utilizes physical assessment data, diagnostic data (lab, radiology, diagnostic testing), pharmacological information and patient/family perceptions in formulating nursing diagnosis related to focus problem areas and identifying goals of care.

·         Real time Electronic Medical Record (EMR) documentation is done in accordance with hospital and unit policies.

·         Demonstrates knowledge of the profound and prolonged impact of disability and chronic illness on an individual’s developmental, physical, social, emotional, spiritual, economic, vocational, and leisure status.

·         Integrates the interdisciplinary approach to individualized treatment plan.

·         Maintains comfort, supports human functions and responses, and maintains an environment conducive to wellbeing utilizing the CARE delivery model.

·         Incorporates the interdisciplinary treatment plan into the plan of care.

·         Evaluates the outcomes of both the nursing care and interdisciplinary treatment plan.

·         Partners with other patient care team members to achieve patient’s progress towards outcomes identified in both the plan of care and the interdisciplinary treatment plan.

·         Effectively delegates tasks and responsibilities to other members of the healthcare team and assumes responsibility for follow-up.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Requirements

Education:

 

 

 

·         Must have successfully completed an accredited nursing program

·         BSN degree

Experience:

 

 

 

·         At least 3 years of direct patient care in medical /surgical or critical care area.

·         Previous experience as a preceptor or education experience.

·         Previous charge nurse experience.

License(s)/Certification(s):

 

 

 

·         Must possess current RN Licensure in the state of Iowa or compact state.

·         Obtain/Maintain current BLS certification.

·         Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicles for work-related reasons.

·         Specialty certification

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

 

 

 

 

·         Reads, writes, comprehends and speaks fluent English

·         Must be proficient in Electronic Medical Record (EMR) documentation.

·         Ability to direct others and exercise judgement in problem solving scenarios.

·         Possess a comprehensive knowledge of general nursing theory and practice and expanded knowledge of current clinical and specialized patient care concepts.

·         Microsoft Office- basic computer skills
