Summary

The Iowa City VA Health Care System is currently recruiting for one (1) Full-Time Registered Respiratory Therapist to meet the needs of our Veteran population.

Responsibilities

The Registered Respiratory Therapist assesses the respiratory status of assigned patients through physical exam, chart review of history and physical, and response to ordered therapy. Performs airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as required. Communicates (effectively) before, during and after the test procedure with the patient, family, peers, physicians, and nursing staff, maintaining a team focus. Corrects and adjusts respiratory care and diagnostic equipment, communicates operational theory to other health care professionals, and recommends technology most appropriate to maximize patient comfort and safety, and the most effective/appropriate use of technology. Performs/assists with diagnostic testing procedures (arterial blood gases, pulmonary function testing/screening, pulse oximetry, CPAP/BiPAP, bronchoscopy etc.) The respiratory therapist will be required to assist other inpatient and/or outpatient personnel as time permits.Duties include:

  • Observes and monitors signs and symptoms, general behaviors, reactions and general physical responses to respiratory care treatment and diagnostic testing.
  • Determines whether signs, symptoms, behaviors, reactions or general responses exhibit abnormal characteristics.
  • Performs pulmonary testing.
  • Administers:
    • Medical gases, aerosols and humidification.
    • Lung expansion therapies
    • Bronchopulmonary hygiene therapies
  • Initiates, monitors, modifies and discontinues invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation.Inserts and maintains artificial airways. The inpatient respiratory therapist will maintain Out of Operating Room Airway Management (OOORAM) certification.
  • Performs diagnostic and testing techniques in the medical management of patients to assist in diagnosing, monitoring and treating pulmonary abnormalities including measurement of ventilatory volumes, pressures and flows; and collection of specimens of blood and from the respiratory tract.

Work Schedule: Day/Evening/Night Rotation. Rotating Weekends and Holidays.
