The Iowa City VA Health Care System (ICVACS) is currently recruiting for one (1) Registered Nurse to work as a Pain Clinic Case Manager. ICVAHCS is in Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 23. This position falls under the clinical pathway as a direct care nurse and reports to Clinical Manager, Patient Care Service Line. This position is covered by bargaining unit AFGE 2547 and open 14 days.


The Pain Clinic Nurse Case Manager delivers excellent case management to patients suffering from pain. The Pain Clinic Case Manager demonstrates thorough knowledge and responsibility for the management of clinic functions as well as management of pain in nursing care as a functional team member of Patient Care Service Line.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of Pain Clinic Case Management by providing advanced nursing, evidenced-based care, education and consultation to Veteran patients.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the role of Pain Clinic Case Management in patient-centered care
  • Monitors the use of resources to provide quality care while maintaining costs.
  • Must be able to assess patients for actual or potential nursing issues and complications
  • Able to articulate to and work with the patient and family/caregiver to ensure understanding of related care plan.
  • Must coordinate nursing care across the continuum, ensuring seamless transitions in care from outpatient to home or care in the community.
  • Follows up on referrals, labs, and other tests to ensure continuity of care.
  • Provides and documents pre-procedural nursing education for patients.
  • Monitors appropriate utilization of care in the clinic and works with interdisciplinary team to ensure timely access to Pain Clinic care.
  • Collaborates with other VA and outside agencies or facilities to coordinate necessary related post-clinical care and rehabilitation.
  • Identifies gaps in the care plan and utilizes necessary resources to fill gaps in care.
  • Provides coverage to other specialty Case Managers as needed.
  • Required to obtain and maintain Basic Life Saving certification, Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior Level 2 throughout employment.
  • Encouraged to obtain and maintain case management certification.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 07:30 am - 04:00 pm or 08:00 am - 04:30 pm
