This position is within the Iowa City VA Health Care System, Patient Care Services.The Inpatient Float Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to the Medical and Surgical patient population. This includes: performing initial and ongoing physiological, psychological, sociological, and spiritual assessments, obtaining health histories; providing care interventions and patient education about their treatment plan.

  • shall maintain knowledge of assessment and implementation of care delivered to patients with various medical, surgical and mental health diagnosis.
  • requires flexibility in schedule and assignments, as this is a 24/7 hospital. Primary hours of the Inpatient Float RN are off tours (Evening/Night), weekends, and holidays.
  • must be poised and articulate in communicating with people of varied educational levels and ethnic backgrounds.
  • willing to work cooperatively as a member of a team in all assignments.
  • makes caring for the veteran his/her priority while in the work setting and demonstrates customer service principles in all aspects of work.
  • self-motivated in the pursuit of meeting professional work standards.
  • provides expert professional nursing care on the Medical/Surgical Areas for the inpatient population during their stay.
  • assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the care of the patient.
  • assure that the patient is prepared for admission, transfer and discharge by providing the necessary education to the patient and responsible caregiver.
  • must have excellent written and oral communication
  • delivers nursing care in the Inpatient Medical and/or Surgical areas. The delivery of care is in accordance with the established standards, policies and procedures. This includes Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) and must be proficient and demonstrate competency in the ability to either set up or reprocess RME as applicable for all equipment for which trained.
  • provides nursing care to the Mental Health (9W) patient population. Primary responsibilities when assisting on 9W will include providing 1:1 care and the passing of medications.
Work Schedule: Evening/Night Rotation with weekends and holidays required.
