Summary

The Iowa City VA Health Care System is currently recruiting for one (1) Inpatient Medical/Surgical Telemetry (Primary Surgical Unit) Staff RN. The ICVAHCS is seeking an individual who possess good organizational skills which enable completion of work, a demonstrated ability to assume leadership in a patient centered program, and the ability to establish effective communication with patients, families, visitors, and members of the team. The ICVAHCS is one of the facilities located in VISN 23.

Responsibilities

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • The Inpatient Medical/Surgical Telemetry RN must have the ability to analyze critical conditions, recognize appropriate monitoring, and critical thinking skills to provide this patient population with the correct treatment plan.
  • The incumbent must have the knowledge and ability to safely administer and document critical medication and high alert medication.
  • The incumbent must have the awareness to recognize possible adverse effects in order to provide safe patient care.
  • The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to care for patient before and after invasive procedures in which patients receive moderate sedation or anesthesia such as interventional radiology, cardiac catheterization or surgical procedures.
  • The incumbent must exhibit the ability to utilize critical thinking skills to recognize signs and symptoms of cardiopulmonary and respiratory status changes in order to implement appropriate interventions in a timely manner.
  • The incumbent must have the knowledge and ability to treat patients in emergencies; this would include the initiation of standardized interventions to stabilize the patient awaiting transfer to a critical care unit.
  • The incumbent must be able to possess the cognitive ability to operate the telemetry system, and the ability to hear, see, acknowledging and respond to critical alarms.
  • The incumbent must be physically capable of competently operating and processing equipment necessary for patient care as per the equipment SOP and RME policies.

Work Schedule: 7:30 pm to 8:00 am, 11:30 pm to 8:00 am, and 3:30 pm to 12:00 am. Work schedules vary, however, they are night and evening shifts with orientation and mandatory trainings occurring during administrative hours. Position includes rotating weekends and holidays.

This position requires flexibility in schedule and assignments, as this is a 24/7 hospital. The incumbent must be poised and articulate in communicating with people of varied educational levels and varied ethnic backgrounds. Willing to work cooperatively as a member of a team in all assignments. Makes caring for the veteran his/her priority while in the work setting and demonstrates customer service principles in all aspects of work. Self motivated in the pursuit of meeting professional work standards.
