Johnson County is seeking a physician to provide medical guidance and leadership for our Ambulance Service.  The Medical Director shall serve as the medical authority for Johnson County Ambulance Service providing medical direction for ambulance personnel in conformance with acceptable emergency medical practices and procedures.

  • Be accessible for medical direction twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week, or assure accessibility to alternate medical direction. Ensure that those duties and responsibilities are not relinquished before a replacement is functioning in that capacity.
  • Be available for individual evaluation and consultation to service program personnel.
  • Complete a department sponsored medical director training within one year of assuming duties as medical director and at a minimum once every three years thereafter.    
  • Develop, approve, and update JCAS protocols that meet or exceed the minimum EMS clinical guidelines approved by the IDPH.    
  • Ensure that the emergency medical providers on JCAS are credentialed in the emergency medical skills to be provided and the duties of the emergency medical care provider do not exceed the provider's scope of practice as referenced in 641-131 and the service programs EMS service level of authorization.    
  • Approve JCAS's CQI program.    
  • Perform, or appoint a designee, to complete the medical audits in JCAS's established CQI policy.    
  • Randomly audit (at least quarterly) documentation of calls where emergency medical care was provided.    
  • Develop and maintain liaisons between JCAS, other physicians, physician designees, and the hospitals.     
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement, monitor and evaluate the activities of JCAS and evaluate individual personal performance.    
  • Meet with the JCAS Education Supervisor quarterly to discuss the QA/QI program along with any other pertinent issues.    
  • Assess the continuing education needs of JCAS and service personnel and assist as needed in providing appropriate continuing education.     
  • Ensure maintenance of skills of JCAS personnel.    
  • Attend mandatory skills sessions.    
  • Attend ACLS and PALS on alternating years.    
  • Inform the medical community of the emergency medical care being provided according to approved protocols in the service program area.    
  • Assist in the resolution of JCAS operational problems as necessary.    
  • Sign controlled substance prescriptions.    
  • Liaison with emergency medical dispatch program.    
  • Liaison for Johnson County first responder program and sign forms as needed.    
  • Assist with national registry and State of Iowa renewal authorization.    
  • Meet with UIHC Emergency Medical Resident on EMS rotation regarding medical direction of ground ambulance service.    
  • Designates UIHC and Mercy to provide online medical direction to JCAS personnel, provided each hospital maintains an online medical direction agreement with the Iowa Department of Public Health.    
  • Provides oversight for automated external defibrillators and prescriptions for the devices.

The medical director shall maintain an Iowa Physician’s License and remain current in EMS practices on a state and national level. Two years EMS medical director experience, FACEP and/or completed EMS fellowship preferred.
