Position Summary:Provide leadership to the Internal Communications unit within the UI Health Care Marketing and Communications department. This includes creating communications plans and messaging, change management consultation, research, and coordinating communications for internal audiences (including staff, faculty, and patients and visitors); supervising Internal Communications staff; and financial oversight of the unit. Responsible for initiating continuous process improvement.
Position Responsibilities:
Message Development and Implementation
  • Collaborate with managers, department heads and senior leaders to develop appropriate messages for internal audiences.
  • Develop and implement communications plans.
  • Provide editorial support of various marketing initiatives, projects, etc.
  • Write and edit material for various internal communications channels.
  • Plan and execute town halls and other internal communication forums.
Public Relations
  • Serve as liaison to several departments/units.
  • Participate in UI Health Care committees.
Information Management
  • Identify and implement metrics and other key performance indicators for internal communications efforts.
  • Assist marketing endeavors; contribute to building UI Health Care brand; support service initiatives.
  • Be an advocate for consistent, correct usage of style guidelines, including UI Health Care, UI, and AP style applications.  
Strategic Planning
  • Lead strategic planning for and provide consultation to UI Health Care leaders regarding internal/employee communications.
  • Identify and champion new channels of communications that support employee engagement.
  • Maintain knowledge of best practices in internal communications.
  • Plan and activate internal communications during emergency preparedness drills and real-time events.
Financial Responsibility
  • Provide information and advice to division director during budget development and monitor unit budget throughout fiscal year
  • Event planning and budget management
Supervision/Leadership
  • Recommend for hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Internal Communications staff members.
  • May provide direction, assignments, and feedback to student workers and/or staff.

Education Required
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, or English or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Experience Requirements
  • 3-5 years of experience in employee and/or organizational communication. 
  • Knowledge of and ability to develop, produce and distribute news, newsletters and other communications materials targeted at the employees.
  • Excellent verbal & interpersonal communication skills.Ability to present to large and small groups.
  • Excellent writing skills; experience writing a wide variety of materials—short news items, emails, web content, brochures, etc.
  • Proven management and team building skills; ability to provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved.
  • Ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient use of technical and administrative resources, to achieve project objectives.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a collaborative environment.
  • Proficient in computer software applications.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism or English preferred.
  • 7 to 10 years of experience in employee and/or organizational communication.
  • Experience working in marketing or communications in an academic medical center or large hospital/health care system
  • Membership in the professional association related to the field of communications.  
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to operational (short term), tactical (1-2 years) and strategic (3-5 years) planning.
  • Knowledge of tools and techniques for developing web-based dissemination of information.
