Under general supervision and the guidance of a primary clinical provider (Registered Nurse, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner or Medical Advisor) and within the scope of practice for a Licensed Practical Nurse, provides public health nursing services to individuals, families and target populations in the Public Health Clinic.

Works in all areas of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and directly in areas of communicable disease including STD/HIV, family care health, wellness and child and adult immunizations. Primary responsibilities include participation in the clinic by scheduling patient appointments, assessing patient health needs and performing medical procedures as directed by documenting medical information and maintaining medical supply inventories.

Welcomes clients and schedules appointments for clinic services. Completes necessary teaching on the importance of keeping appointments. Rooms patients for physical exams.

Measures and records heights, weights, vision screens and vital signs. Performs nursing duties such as drawing blood, finger sticks, taking vital signs and client histories and collecting routine lab specimens (such as urine). Collects data and documents information regarding client’s health status including but not limited to: the chief complaint, a basic assessment of general body systems, vital signs, medication usage, signs and symptoms of illness/injury/disease, barriers to obtaining needed care and client/parental knowledge.

Administers needed immunizations/prescribed medications, calls in medication refills to pharmacies as directed by the provider and completes clinical treatments/procedures in a safe manner and according to current policy. Participates in immunization clinics. Monitors compliance of all assigned clinics regarding drug/vaccine manufacturer and current policy requirements to ensure drug/vaccine potency and client safety. Performs HIV/HCV testing and pre- and post-counseling (at the direction of the RN).

Obtains, labels/documents and transports collected lab specimens (slides, tubes, etc.) and accompanying paperwork to laboratory after procedures. Provides accurate and appropriate information to clients related to client’s plan of care, immunizations and other prescribed medications/treatment, including possible side effects. Assures adequate supplies for clinic operation. Maintains medical supply inventory, stocks patient rooms, etc. Participates in telephone triage (determines what treatment is needed at the moment). Performs all other related duties as assigned. Knows the products they personally produce and the customers of each product. Listens to the “Voice of the Customer” and closes gaps between customer expectations and experience whenever possible.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from a school of Practical Nursing accredited by the National League for Nursing. Valid Iowa license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. 
  • Two (2) years of experience as an LPN in the delivery of clinical health services in a medical office setting required; experience with underserved target populations preferred. Good knowledge of LPN scope of practice, duties and techniques. 
  • Good understanding of the sensitivity of medical records and the need for confidentiality. Works effectively with clients, staff and community partners to establish and maintain trust and positive, effective working relationships. 
  • Ability to inventory, stock and order clinic supplies. Ability to communicate and work well with the public. Skills in proper telephone and receptionist techniques. Skills in filing, typing and basic computer operation. 
  • Valid State of Iowa driver’s license required. Must pass a County physical examination which includes a drug test after offer of employment. Regular work attendance required.

SHIFT:8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.Monday - Friday

SALARY:$19.65/hour
