Direct Support Professional (DSP)

Basic Function:
Responsible for providing assistance to residents living in our Residential Group Home as they work to achieve personal goals of their own choice.

Minimum Education/Experience/Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to be an effective communicator
  • Car registration and vehicle insurance if providing transportation for individuals receiving services
  • Six months of experience in human services preferred
  • Willingness to work with customers experiencing Mental Illness/Developmental Disabilities
  • Successful clearance of background check, drug screening, and reference checks
  • Must be approved as an acceptable driver with To The Rescue’s auto insurance company

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to do all physical aspects of the position with reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs frequently and up to 40 lbs occasionally.
  • Normal vision with correction.
  • Normal range of hearing with corrections.
  • Frequently perform daily duties which involve standing, bending, pivoting, squatting, kneeling, and crouching.

Training Requirements:
To The Rescue will provide the required training based upon the employee’s experience, and State curriculum requirements. All employees are expected to participate in meetings and training throughout their employment.

Primary Duties:
  • Abide by all To The Rescue policies and procedures of the program.
  • Supports and assists individuals in being successful in their roles within their living, working, learning and social environments.
  • Provide assistance with daily activities such as meal preparation and planning; medication administration; and personal care.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of client’s in their care.
  • Facilitate community involvement by accompanying individuals on outings in the community or providing transportation to work or other activities.
  • Provide timely, complete, legible, and accurate documentation.
  • Honor all aspects of the Client Bill of Rights and adhere to all policies of confidentiality.
  • Support customers in achieving personal goals of their own choice.
  • Follow the service plan and use it as a guide to deliver services.
  • Recognize and document goal progress and relevant personal interventions in an objective, clear, and brief manner.
  • Support customers as they identify and build natural supports for their needs.
  • Advocate for customers while promoting role recovery/discovery of others.
  • Show tolerance for individual differences.
  • Demonstrate good role modeling for the customers we serve.
  • Represent To The Rescue in a positive and professional manner to all clients, families, co-workers and the public.
