Infection Prevention Specialist

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by ensuring compliance with Local, State and Federal laws and regulations to reduce transmission of infections in our organization. The role supports direct care providers through education and surveillance of isolation and infection prevention practices. This specialty also promotes programs such as Hand Hygiene, Healthcare-Associated Infection Reductions and Antimicrobial Stewardship.

Job Specific Duties/Essential Functions:
  • Surveillance of MDRO's, HAI's, high risk procedures and targeted risk populations based on regulatory and/or risk analysis. Surveillance will follow CDC definitions.
  • Data entry into internal and external databases.
  • Education of healthcare workers and patients regarding hand hygiene, isolation precautions, infection prevention technique and use of cleaning products/ other products.
  • Attendance at meetings for the purpose of being a resource for infection prevention & control standards. Provide committees/councils reports as requested.
  • Maintain Infection Prevention policies and procedures for the organization.
  • Integral member of construction/renovation projects for the organization. Assist with environmental testing at construction sites. Sign PCRA's for all Category III/IV projects.
  • Provide direct patient care PCN allergy testing to patients per organizational protocol.
  • Provide direct patient care skin scraping, lice checks, skin assessments per health care provider request.
  • Observation of practices such as hand hygiene, appropriate use of PPE, cleaning technique, clean-to-dirty workflow, etc to make recommendations if needed on practice enhancements.
  • Manage infection outbreaks for the organization. Collect line lists, notify those possibly affected, set up additional transmission precautions, debrief on the event.
  • Assessment of products that can reduce HAI's for the organization.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Maintains knowledge in clinical and health care processes.
  • Must maintain BCLS. Demonstrates analytical, critical thinking and communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills: Able to learn data entry, Microsoft Office programs, comfortable with all areas of computers, fax machines, telephone, iPAD use.
  • Demonstrates ability to lead and/or facilitate teams and/or projects toward successful achievement of goals.

Professional Experience– Required vs. Preferred:
  • Must have at least 3 years of acute care clinical experience.
  • In addition, must also have demonstrated experience in leadership skills, statistics, principles of epidemiology, construction/air quality testing and performance improvement or attend formal training in these areas within 12 months of hire.
  • Must exhibit proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer skills.

Education-Required vs. Preferred:
  • Bachelors degree required, Masters degree preferred.
  • Field of study should be science-specific (nursing, medical technician, etc).

Licensure, Certification, Registration - Required vs. Preferred:
  • If nurse or medical technician background, current licensure in the State of Iowa.
  • Either current board certification in Infection Control & Epidemiology (CIC) or within three (3) years of hire.
  • Both of these are required.
