The Health Service Supervisor will serve as a direct patient care nurse, charge nurse, and an active member of the management team to assist with coordination, integration, facilitation, and provision of cost effective, high quality patient care, within an assigned area, consistent with the strategic priorities and mission of Mercy Medical Center.

  • Job Specific Duties/Essential Functions
    • Demonstrates accountability for the onboarding of new staff and oversight of the orientation process.
    • Assures an appropriate plan is in place for the ongoing development and competency of existing staff.
    • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager to assist with the implementation of the business plan.
    • Assists the Nurse Manager with twenty-four hour management of patient care to ensure that optimal patient outcomes are achieved.
    • Provides feedback to nursing staff, shift supervisors and other support staff to assist with performance improvement.  This includes providing input into Performance Evaluations.
    • Provides input for financial management activities including operational budgetary decisions and cost containment.
    • Assists with the development, implementation and evaluation of departmental quality improvement opportunities.
    • Participates in and contributes to departmental and organizational committees, meetings and/or projects in keeping with organization and unit strategic goals.
    • Assists with planning and implementation of monthly departmental meetings.
    • Coordinates weekly care conference and completes care conference follow-up and documentation within the week they are held.
    • Provides support with admissions, including assessment of appropriateness of new residents, discharges, and transfers as needed.
    • Functions as staff nurse on unit in the event of last minute staffing needs or during staff’s committee meeting obligations.
    • Addresses resident, family and staff complaints in a timely manner.
    • Reviews monthly orders and med sheets.
    • Creates and maintains a schedule that ensures proper staffing complement to resident demand.

  • Professional Experience– Required vs. Preferred
    • Three years of clinical practice is required.
    • Minimum of two years of management or supervisory skills is preferred.

  • Education-Required vs. Preferred
    • A baccalaureate degree in nursing is preferred.

  • Licensure, Certification, Registration - Required vs. Preferred
    • Currently licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Iowa required.
    • Current certification in BCLS, in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
