This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care through participation in the interdisciplinary team; the Patient Care Tech II performs designated procedures under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Job Specific Duties/Essential Functions
  • Ensure that accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families, and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed. Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome
  • Performs bedside nursing care, making observations and collecting data on assigned patients under the direct observation of the RN.
  • Effectively organizes and prioritizes daily work and makes adjustments, taking into consideration the needs of the patient, department, physicians, and other staff.
  • Responds appropriately to emergencies and life-threatening situations.
  • Maintains adequate stock supplies and keeps staff informed of any changes in supplies.
  • Performs water treatment testing, accurately documents, and notifies appropriate personnel of testing results outside of the established standards.
  • Performs dialysis treatments (machine set up, programming, monitoring, initiation and discontinuing etc.) according to unit policy and procedures.
  • Identifies opportunities for department improvements providing ideas and solutions.
  • Obtains water cultures as scheduled.
  • Disinfects water loop as scheduled.

Professional Experience– Required vs. Preferred
  • Previous patient care tech experience preferred

Education-Required vs. Preferred
  • If no CCHT at time of hire, high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must have ONE of the following:
           -- completion of a certified nurse assistant (CNA) program
           -- a minimum of 2 years in a baccalaureate program
           -- one year in an ADN program
      -- comparable education, training, and experience in the absence of successful completion of a certified nurse assistant (CNA) program

Licensure, Certification, Registration - Required vs. Preferred
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support, in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • Required or must obtain within 18 months of hire one of the following certifications:
            -- Certification for Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT)
            -- Hemodialysis Technician Certification (CHT)
            -- Clinical Nephrology Technology (CCNT)
