Job Duties/Essential Functions
  • Job Duties
    • Ensures that accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families, and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed. Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome.
    • Provides safe and effective patient care under the supervision of the licensed nurse by performing tasks and support functions as delegated by department.
    • Observes and communicates to the licensed nurse any changes in patient condition and pertinent information regarding the needs of the patient and/or significant others.
    • Demonstrates effective and age appropriate communication as well as the ability to understand the needs of the patient including non-verbal communication, fears, anxieties and language/cultural barriers.
    • Maintains accurate and real time documentation of patient care provided.
    • Assures patient privacy by knocking on doors, closing curtains and protecting patient information.
    • Responds within scope of practice to emergencies and life threatening conditions.
    • Demonstrates support for changes in practice designed to improve performance.
    • Organizes and prioritizes daily work, taking into account the needs of patients, families and other health care workers.
    • Maintains cleanliness and organization of patient rooms and department work areas.
    • Assists in identifying quality improvement opportunities and demonstrate support for changes in practice designed to improve performance.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks, identify needs for changes in priorities and takes the initiative to recommend and implement changes in concert with their supervisor.

  • Department Specific Duties
    • Maintains skills and competencies from each of the following departments; Z31 Ortho, Z41 SIC, Z51 PMC, Z81 CDU, and Z91 CSC.
    • Completes orientation and maintains skills/competencies to an additional unit outside the list of departments above which may include; ED, Trauma, IRU, BHS, Hallmar, Hospice House, Pediatrics & Women's & Children's - the employee must receive approval from the Unit Manager prior to orienting to any of these departments.

  • The employee must maintain competencies within their core departments at all times, which includes: Z31, Z41, Z51, Z81 and Z91 for the Med-Surg pool (663) and Hallmar, Z53, Z71(TCU) and IRU for Post-Acute pool (667).
  • The employee will need to complete orientation on at least 1 unit outside of their core departments if they are in the Med-Surg pool (dept. 663) as well as complete the required competencies needed to function safely on that department. These competencies will be determined by the department manager for that specific unit.
  • The employee will need to complete orientation on at least 2 units outside of their core departments if they are in the Post-Acute pool (dept. 667) as well as complete the required competencies needed to function safely on those two departments. These competencies will be determined by the department manager.
Professional Experience
  • Previous Patient Care Tech or Certified Nursing Assistant experience preferred
Education
  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred
  • In addition, ONE of the following is preferred: 
    • ­completion of a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) or Health Support Professional program ­
    • a minimum of 2 years in a Bachelors in Nursing Degree program
    • first year student in an ADN program ­
    • comparable education, training and experience in the absence of successful completion of a CNA or Health Support Professional program
Licensure, Certification, Registration
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required.  Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
Physical Demand Requirements
  • Heavy: Must be able to lift up to 15# to waist and shoulder height on frequent basis.
  • Able to lift up to 50# on occasional basis for assist with patient transfers.
  • Rare lifting of up to 100# for controlled falls.
  • Able to lift 15# overhead on occasional basis.
  • Able to push and pull of up to 20# of horizontal force on frequent basis, up to 35# of horizontal force on occasional basis and up to 50# of horizontal force on rare basis.
  • Able to administer CPR.

Location: Mercy Medical Center - Cedar Rapids · Medical Float Pool
Schedule: Full Time, Night Shift, Sunday through Thursday night 10pm-6:30am
