A permanent position as a key member of the premier packaging and shipping team in Eastern Iowa.

This is a difficult job to classify; it doesn't fit in just one category. This position fills a multidimensional job, which requires a versatile individual who is interested in learning new things and in serving retail and commercial clients.

This is a position with managerial potential in a highly orchestrated environment. Our aggressive training schedule is designed to take a new employee from a low wage starter position the first week to a proficient team member making at least $12 an hour after completion of the training period ( approximately 13 weeks ). During the training period, incremental raises will be awarded upon the successful completion of each segment.

By the end of the training period, you will be a Store Operator, capable of operating our store on your own. Additional certifications are available following the training period, and will result in the additional responsibilities and appropriate increases in compensation. You do not need to know everything, but you do need to be interested in learning. We will provide all training.
This is a full-time position. Usual work hours will fall between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., M-F, and 9-4 on Saturdays, and occasional special pick-ups or trade shows. Sunday store hours will be limited to 1-3 weeks in December (afternoon only).

The successful candidate will:
  • Be punctual and reliable, have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation to work that does not involve public transportation, be able to stand for most or all of the workday, work outdoors as well as indoors, and be able to lift and carry 50 pounds, alone, more with a partner.
  • Pass a reference and security background check
  • Demonstrate an interest in this business and desire to learn.
  • Be self-directed, yet work effectively as part of a team.
  • Know how to follow written and oral directions and accurately interpret and execute detailed procedures. 
  • Demonstrate basic keyboarding and computer skills, competence in basic arithmetic operations, and familiarity with decimal numbers and like and unlike fractions
The successful candidate will learn to:
  • Sell packaging, shipping, retail packaging materials, business services, such as faxes and copies, and private mail box service, as well as other products and services offered by Pak Mail.
  • Open and close the store, order, receive and stock inventory, answer phones, sort mail, file, track packages, copy and fax single, multi-page, and multi-sided documents, enter data into database and spreadsheet programs, and create databases. A working knowledge of Microsoft Office is a plus.
  • Customer package everything from books to blown glass globes to electronics to furniture to machinery. This will include activities such as designing and building crates and corrugated boxes, palleting shipments, assisting with item puck up, receiving small packages, and receiving large packages, including palleted and unpalleted freight. Working with hazardous material is not a part of the job description; however, you will learn to identify such materials.
  • Ship domestic and international packages through multiple carriers. This will include but not be limited to understanding the differences between and among the various carrier's capabilities and regulations, quoting and selling various carrier products and services, advising clients on how to select the most appropriate carrier and service for their shipment, processing documentation for shipments, and assisting carriers as they pick up and deliver.

The outstanding candidate will be familiar with power tools and enjoy woodworking, have a basic knowledge of world geography, have experience driving a box truck and operating a lift gate, and be conversant in current computer and internet software and hardware equipment and procedures.
