Director of Family Philanthropy

Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation

Applications are being accepted by the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation for the position of Director of Family Philanthropy. This position will cultivate relationships with a portfolio of high-net-worth individuals and multi-generational families, lead a cross-functional team called Family Philanthropy, serve as the primary liaison for professional advisors, and as the primary planned giving resource for the organization.


Essential Functions: 

Family Philanthropy

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and provide stewardship for high-net-worth donors and prospects and in partnership with their professional advisors (attorneys, accountants, financial advisors and planners) to encourage their giving to/through the Community Foundation.
  • Help donors clarify their philanthropic goals and find ways to realize those goals.
  • Lead the cross-functional team that prepares for and facilitates family meetings.
  • Work with members of the Development, Program, Marketing, and Finance Teams to:
    • maintain the growth and accuracy of the donor database, track and record all donor information, communications, and special requests regarding gifts and/or funds.
    • provide timely and accurate reports to donors regarding fund activity, the impact of grants made by donors through the Community foundation and alert donors to emerging opportunities for planned giving.
    • stay current on developments in the nonprofit community to provide donors with helpful information on emerging opportunities and the impact of grants.
  • Administer 21/64 an independent nonprofit practice providing multigenerational advising, facilitation, and training for next generation engagement.

Donor Development

Provide timely response and support for fund holders.  Specific tasks include:

  • Analyze assigned portfolio and develop segmented cultivation strategy.
  • Manage portfolio-specific projects, as assigned.
  • Handle verbal and written inquiries from fund holders requesting assistance with fund management.  Often involves cross-team collaboration.
  • Prepare materials for meetings with fund holders and prospective donors.
  • Utilize CRM module in the iPhi database.
  • Participate in and support Community Foundation events.
  • Participate in and support the Development Committee as needed. 

Planned Giving

  • Lead donor stewardship for the William Quarton Heritage Society members. 
  • Know, understand and keep current on legal and technical issues as they affect current and prospective donors and gifts; advises the Board and Development Team on these issues as necessary.
  • Conduct initial review of completed documents to ensure that they comply with planned giving standards, IRS guidelines, and are in the Community Foundation’s best interest. 
  • Negotiate terms of planned giving agreements with donors and their advisors, subject to approval of the Chief Financial Officer and President & CEO.
  • Develop, maintain, and update fund policies and procedures, as necessary.
  • Work closely with the Vice President of Marketing and Communications to:
    • develop marketing tools for planned giving initiatives.
    • maintain the planned giving content of the Community Foundation website.

Professional Advisors

  • Identify and cultivate professional advisors to encourage their clients giving to/through the Community Foundation.
  • Facilitate in-service training to professional advisors and support staff. 
  • Provide materials for professional advisors for their use, exchange up-to-date information on current best practices, requires help in obtaining referrals and discuss donor interests. 


  • Demonstrated ability to raise funds from individuals, businesses, private foundations and other potential contributors and in-depth knowledge of philanthropy is required.
  • Think strategically about asset and donor development and effectively build relationships with donors and other constituents. 
  • Strong knowledge of the full range of deferred giving vehicles and the tax laws related to charitable giving and experience in developing and implementing successful planned gifts is preferred. 
  • Have knowledge of estate planning, including wills, trusts and estate and gift tax laws.
  • Know and administer the legal recordkeeping requirements for fundraising and documenting planned gifts. 
  • Familiarity with financial planning and/or philanthropy techniques preferred. 
  • Possess the ability to work independently, research and analysis, communication, and project management. 
  • Demonstrate sound judgment, high integrity and respect for confidentiality, approachability, initiative, and the ability to understand complex issues and challenges.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:  Full-time or part-time

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of ten years professional experience in development or a closely related field is required. 
  • A CFRE designation and existing membership in the Eastern Iowa Estate Planning Council or similar organization are advantages. 
  • Prior nonprofit experience is preferred. 

Salary Range:   $70,000 - $84,000
