Major Functions and Purpose: 

The Vice President for Development and Marketing is responsible for designing, planning, leading, implementing and evaluating all of the institution’s fundraising efforts, planned giving initiatives, and short and long-term designated giving for projects and identified needs. This position will articulate the museum's funding priorities and oversee the implementation of a targeted strategy for fundraising in line with the NCSML’s dynamic strategic plan from individuals, foundations and corporations. S/he is responsible for meeting annual and other campaign budgetary goals.

The Vice President for Development and Marketing provides leadership and management of the development and marketing departments. This will include, but is not limited to, providing strategic direction and supervising staff and volunteers involved in development and marketing programs and activities.

This position is responsible for leading staff and volunteers in developing resources to ensure a strong base of financial support. The incumbent sets goals, monitors work, and evaluates results to ensure that departmental objectives and operating requirements are met and are in line with the needs and mission of the organization.

In conjunction with the President/CEO, this position acts as a representative and ambassador to the organization's constituents to promote positive relationships and strong partnershipsThis individual will be an ex-officio member of the NCSML’s Board of Trustees Finance, Governance, and Development committees.  

Essential Job Functions

  • Works directly with the President/CEO and senior staff to set overall organizational policies and priorities. Works with the development staff to develop long and short-term goals, strategies, and approaches to ensure successful annual campaigns in line with the NCSML strategic plan. Considers and analyses the implications of proposed actions and decisions by individual areas on the whole of the organization (financial, operating and administrative aspects).
  • Provides effective training, support, and leadership to staff and volunteers to meet annual and long-term financial goals.
  • Systematically cultivates long term, collaborative, strategic relationships with selected organizations and individuals.
  • Acts an ambassador for philanthropy locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally.
  • Develops and implements an annual plan for departmental operations.
  • Writes, develops, and processes 4-6 fund appeals raising a minimum of $100,000 per year.
  • Continuously aligns all aspects of the department’s operations to facilitate and reinforce the effectiveness of strategic plans. This includes aligning key business processes, the departmental structure, management practices, communications, and the development and deployment of staff and volunteers.
  • Works with all departments and provides strategic information and guidance to assist in developing goals, plans, and procedures, and in resource attainment including but not limited to grants, contracts and direct contributions.
  • Leads and manages the affairs of the department including budgeting, program direction, supervision and evaluation of assigned staff.
  • Develops innovative recognition opportunities, materials, and events for continuity and donor stewardship.
  • Organizes or participates in community initiatives and other regional and national events to promote the organization and philanthropy.
  • Works closely with all the other department heads on all organizational marketing and communications initiatives.
  • Works closely with the Database Manager to monitor donor giving and ongoing follow-up.
  • Responsible for planned giving agreements working with the development team.
  • This position requires some travel throughout the year.  


  • Plans and develops short and long-term strategies and campaigns, which are both strategic and tactical in nature to accomplish organizational goals.
  • Develops strategies and approaches to diversify the base of support and generate increasing levels of giving through the annual campaign.
  • Ensures that programs are in place for all donors to receive appropriate, consistent recognition and an accounting of the impact that their gifts have.
  • Attends strategically important donor calls to ensure a growing base of support for the organization.
  • Develops a plan for ongoing communications pertaining to the Legacy Society, including recruitment, recognition and retention of members.
  • Oversee the writing, tracking and reporting of both large and small grants from local, state, national and international sources.
  • Maintain relationships with local, national, and international foundations and solicit funds.
  • Serve as the institution’s primary legislative strategist and advocacy and policy administrator.
  • Expand and manage a portfolio of select major gift prospects.

Public Relations:

  • Oversees and supervises the marketing and communications department.
  • Acts as goodwill ambassador for the organization to all its constituency and stakeholder groups and acts a spokesperson when required.
  • Prepares and delivers speeches and presentations to organizations, business groups and boards as needed.
  • Develops innovative marketing literature related to development activities with the marketing and communications team.

Education & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience; Master’s preferred.
  • Individual must possess a minimum of 10 years combined leadership experience including five to eight years in a senior management capacity with a complex not-for-profit organization involving a significant number of people and organizations with diverse and varied interests and backgrounds.  
  • Must have at least five years direct fund-raising experience.
  • Must have extensive experience working with teams and community volunteers.

  • Able to balance competing priorities, complex situations and tight deadlines.
  • Proven fund-raising, leadership and consensus building skills. Proven negotiation and mediation skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills. Additional languages are an asset.
  • Able to work with a team based organizational environment.
