The University of Iowa Center for Advancement (UICA), a non-profit organization that aims to enhance the University of Iowa through engagement and philanthropy, seeks a Director of Alumni Engagement, Regional Programs to lead a team of individuals to develop, implement, and manage creative and meaningful outreach initiatives that build relationships between the University of Iowa and its alumni and friends.

The Regional Programs team will be the primary contact for Iowa Clubs and Club leaders, creating relevant, value-added programmatic ideas and support through events, volunteer efforts, communication materials, and other engagement tools. As a senior member of the Alumni Engagement team, the director will encourage lifelong affinity for the University of Iowa through thoughtful programming, honoring each stage of the alumni life-cycle. Along with other senior team members, the director will be a key participant in executing overarching strategic alumni engagement initiatives along with measurement of the success of those initiatives.

  • Lead a team of individuals to cultivate relationships with alumni and friends across the state of Iowa, nationally, and internationally. Through personal visits, events, and group meetings, engage alumni in the life of the university, connecting them with current students, faculty, and administrators as well as with other alumni.
  • Create and maintain a comprehensive strategic plan for Iowa Clubs and Club leadership.
  • Recruit volunteer leaders to support Iowa Club programming. Equip volunteer leaders to grow Iowa Club participation. Prepare succession planning for volunteer leadership transitions.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between assigned regional alumni clubs and the university. Provide connections to other alumni engagement staff for specific programming efforts. Working with volunteer leaders, develop and support initiatives (e.g. programs, events) to strengthen alumni connections to the university. Evaluate programs by defined metrics to determine success.
  • Maintain a consistent presence of alumni programming in the greater Des Moines area. Partner with the university's Director of the Iowa Center for Higher Education to collaborate on alumni, corporate, fan, and friend engagement programs, communications, and initiatives. Serve as the primary alumni engagement contact for university staff managing statewide outreach initiatives (State Fair, RAGBRAI, etc.).
  • Design and execute events to drive participation and engage assigned alumni groups. Maximize event attendance through innovative programming and communications. Manage event logistics including venue and vendor selections, invitation segments, tracking, program development, material preparation, communications, budget, timelines, event evaluation, and on-site staffing and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate as an active partner with the staff of colleges, admissions, career services, athletics, central strategic communications, and other units to develop and enhance alumni programming, communications, and engagement.
  • Work collaboratively to connect assigned alumni or groups to collegiate/unit programs as appropriate. Coordinate travel with faculty, staff, and university administrators as required to support regional alumni programming initiatives.
  • Identify alumni who would like to begin or increase their engagement with Iowa, conducting in-person meetings and phone calls to gauge areas of interest and identify appropriate pathways, including volunteerism and philanthropy.
  • Maximize individual and staff travel by maintaining an evolving portfolio of alumni and friends to visit personally.
  • Provide direct and indirect support for centralized alumni engagement programs. Participate in assigned university-centered alumni events and initiatives (e.g. DAA Awards, Fan Engagement, etc.).
  • Model best practices of an integrated advancement organization. Promote opportunities for philanthropic support of the university when appropriate.

  • Bachelor’s degree required and minimum of five years of experience in alumni engagement, development, higher education, or related field. 
  • Successful candidates will have experience leading and managing a team, with direct leadership experience with volunteers preferred, including identifying, cultivating, training and stewarding individuals. 
  • Experience working with a variety of constituents including students and senior level executives. 
  • Experience in strategic planning with associated measurable outcomes. Experience preparing and/or administering a budget. 
  • Position does require travel and a valid driver’s license is required.
