Job Information:

This position supports Mercy’s philosophy of patient centered care by developing support through planned and major gifts from donors for the mission of Mercy. This position has specific responsibility for developing and implementing a pro-active planned giving program that aligns with the Foundation’s fundraising priorities. This position provides staff leadership and expertise in the areas of deferred giving and estate planning.

Job Specific Duties/Essential Functions
  • In conjunction with the Foundation’s strategic plan, develop and implement a long-range plan to promote and solicit bequests, trusts, gift annuities, and other planned/deferred gift to assist in increasing the Foundation’s financial assets.
  • Manage a portfolio of major and planned giving prospects/donors to deepen their engagement and encourage their giving to the Foundation.
  • Maintain current knowledge of estate/tax laws as they pertain to planned gifts.
  • Develop a stewardship plan that includes timely delivery of annuity payments and other documents, annual updates to donors, and maintaining regular contact with bequest donors as appropriate.
  • Build membership and assist in coordinating activities for the Founders’ Society. This is a recognition society created to identify and recognize planned and deferred gift donors.
  • Educate the hospital’s constituency (including donors, staff, and volunteers) about creative ways to give. Plan and implement regular mailings, seminars, advertising, and other promotional activities to generate leads.
  • Coordinate the activities of the Planning Giving Committee, a group of volunteer professionals who assist the Foundation staff in providing guidance to the program.
  • Other responsibilities include tracking planned gift prospects for ongoing, long-term cultivation, preparing monthly reports, and attendance at special events.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and independently create and manage a proactive planned giving plan.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills, especially with older adults
  • Organizational skills
  • Understanding and appreciation for the mission of Mercy Medical Center and the Mercy Medical Center Foundation
  • Exceptional listening skills. Microsoft Office skills and experience with Raiser’s Office a plus
Professional Experience– Required vs. Preferred
  • Minimum of five years demonstrated success in a fundraising position or strongly related experience.
Education-Required vs. Preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
