Position Overview:
The Development Director is a full-time position.  The Development Director is responsible for a broad range of fund development and communications activities for the organization including:  cultivation and management of individual donor, foundation, corporate, and campaign relationships, annual fund appeals, database management and donor correspondence.  The person will manage, direct, and support the Development Team staff and will oversee the execution of all marketing and communication activities, both digital and traditional, for the organization.  The Development Director will provide oversight and support for agency sponsored events so as to achieve the organization’s fundraising and community engagement objectives while ensuring a consistent brand message and position.  This is a position that requires an ability to think strategically and work with multiple teams within the organization


Reports to:  Executive Director


Responsibilities:

•Work with the Executive Director, Board and relevant staff to develop annual fundraising goals.

•In consultation with the Executive Director, create and implement a strategic development plan.

•Develop and manage the Development Department budget in consultation with the Executive Director.

•Conduct extensive research and report on prospective opportunities to approach foundations, corporations, and individual donors for funding of programs and specific projects.

•Contribute to the creation of grant proposals as appropriate.

•Coordinate all aspects of the grants management process, including tracking progress of grant proposals, schedules of required reports, responding to funding representatives’ questions and conducting the required follow up necessary to secure grants.

•Nurture and cultivate relationships with donors and prospects including recognition and other activities as appropriate.

•Manage current and prospective donor records and generate gift acknowledgements and relevant reports.

•Develop and carry out a planned giving program, including cultivation of current donors and prospects to encourage gifts of assets through planned giving.

•Identify, cultivate, and solicit corporate and organizational donors (sponsorships) in support of Shelter House events and special projects.

•Provide support to the Event Manager for agency sponsored events.

•Manage, direct, and support Development Team staff.

•Develop and update annual campaign and other solicitation material, newsletter(s), annual report and oversee social media communication.

•Oversee all aspects of website development and maintenance to optimize its effectiveness in reaching target audiences and provide easily accessed, informative, and persuasive communications.

•Assist the Executive Director as directed, in keeping members of the Board updated and engaged in Shelter House fundraising activities.

•Work effectively and persuasively with other staff members, training them as needed, and utilizing their knowledge and talent for content development and sharing.

•Represent the organization at meetings with funders, conferences, etc.

•Serve as an agency representative for public speaking engagements

•Participate in professional associations and activities as necessary and appropriate.

•Complete other development and communications projects as assigned.


Job Requirements

•Enthusiasm for the Shelter House mission.

•Knowledge of fundraising principles relative to foundations and other institutional funders.

•Strong research skills and knowledge of fundraising information sources.

•Strong verbal and written communication skills; particularly strong writing/editing ability is required.

•Ability to cultivate meaningful relationships with a broad range of funders and supporters.

•Capacity to take initiative, build consensus and to work effectively cross-departmentally.

•Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work well on deadline.

•Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three to five years progressive development experience including grant writing, cultivation, solicitation, major giving, foundation and corporate fundraising.

•Ability to work independently without significant supervision.


Skills and Requirements

Experience with Microsoft Office, desktop publishing and graphics software (Publisher, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar), and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc) is required. Photography and videography skills are desired.


Other required skills include:

•Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently.

•Track record of accuracy and attention to detail.

•Flexibility in work schedule, as evening and weekend hours will be required.

•Valid Iowa driver’s license.

•Dependable transportation with proof of insurance.
