The Director of Pharmacy System Operations is responsible for directing and coordinating system operational functions and processes of UnityPoint Health pharmacy services to provide optimal medication management services. This position requires experience and in-depth knowledge in pharmacy operations, automation & technology, medication safety and quality, compliance, contracting strategy, and processes in a group purchasing organization (GPO) and non-GPO environment. The Director of Pharmacy System Operations will work to achieve efficient, standardized, safe, compliant, and cost-effective innovative pharmacy operations across all UPH affiliates. In addition, the role will facilitate the execution, ongoing management, and renewal, extension or termination of GPO and non-GPO agreements across a wide variety of support related products and services required in an acute and/or non-acute setting. A key part of the duties will be to work closely with business owners, pharmacy leadership, clinical and general support services leadership and legal counsel to ensure engagement and proper operations. This position is responsible for the identification of opportunities that lead to cost reduction, standardization, efficiency, or other enhancements to overall value of the System. This position relies heavily upon strong communication skills to a wide variety of audiences and through various formats.  The Director of Pharmacy System Operations is a key resource in the ongoing management of vendor relationships and will interface frequently with vendor contacts. This position may work directly with all levels within the organization and all levels within the vendor community.


Leading and Managing Operation

  • Provides leadership, oversite and direction in achieving organizational and department goals through planning, organizing, implementation, and monitoring process in areas of responsibility.
  • Ensures assigned Pharmacy function(s) are performed in accordance with federal, state and/or hospital requirements.
  • Responsible for monitoring and recommend adjustments to department practices to ensure compliance with applicable certification, licensure, and accreditation requirements.
  • Responsible for working with The Chief Pharmacy Officer, System Pharmacy Directors, pharmacy leaders and other system leadership to maximize standardization opportunities.
  • Collaborates with Regional Pharmacy Directors to evaluate operations on an ongoing basis, assesses Region and System processes for opportunities for improvement.
  • Develops and maintains practice standards and metrics/targets for pharmacy operational services.
  • Assists the Chief Pharmacy Officer to lead medication management sustainability work including identification of opportunities
    • Presents finding, recommendations, and strategy to the Chief Pharmacy Officer, System Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, Pharmacy Clinical Service Group and other key stakeholders, as needed and requested
    • Provides information on forecasts, trends, or other conditions that may affect UnityPoint Health affiliate operations or budget planning
    • Collaborates with various data analytics groups to produce directional analysis to guide decisions, impact analysis for budget purposes, and proactive analysis to ensure the intended outcome is being achieved.
  • Accurately tracks savings, cost avoidance, and other key indicators of performance
  • Plan and ensure team members have appropriate orientation and ongoing education for successful job performance.
  • Conducts annual performance appraisals for assigned team members.
  • Ensures departmental policies and procedures and job descriptions are current.
  • Develops and monitors FTEs, operational and capital budget for the department.
  • Investigates budget variance and initiates corrective actions when necessary.
  • Provides guidance to the organization on matters related to protected health information management.
  • Supervises team by motivating, mentoring, coaching and providing guidance to team to deliver high quality, cost effective services.
  • Facilitates the ongoing learning, well-being, professional satisfaction and development of staff through training, work assignments, increased responsibility, and mentoring.
  • Keep apprised of leading Pharmacy practices for implementation within UPH.
  • Provides direct supervision and leadership to team members to ensure effective, efficient operations, optimizing performance and continually improving quality in a vastly changing health care environment
  • Presents data, strategies, and progress towards goals in various governance management forums.
  • Develops procedures and policies for the operation of department, process and team members.
  • Represents the department and works as liaison, aligning and creating efficiencies among all affiliates.

Innovation & Technology

  • In collaboration with the Chief Pharmacy Officer assesses current state and investigates opportunities to implement new technologies and innovative processes. (Omnicell, Integrated Infusion Pumps, Telepharmacy, etc)
  • Assists with due diligence in determination of which technologies to pursue and the RFP process
  • Leads the implementation of new technology and supports Regional Directors during the implementation process

Medication Safety/Quality/Compliance

  • Lead medication safety and quality improvement efforts at the System level and ensures Regional pharmacy programs adhere to best practice standards
  • Supports Regions through accreditation processes
  • Utilizes data, creates and maintains dashboards in collaboration with analytics, to assess current state and drive performance improvement
  • Presents trends and risk areas to leadership and stakeholder groups
  • In collaboration with Reginal Pharmacy Directors, works to ensure pharmacy processes are in compliance with accreditation bodies, State and Federal regulations

Contracting & Purchasing

  • Responsible for working with The Chief Pharmacy Officer, System Pharmacy Directors, pharmacy leaders and other system leadership to maximize standardization opportunities under system structured agreements and minimize the need for local agreements
    • Works closely with business owners, project management, and special project teams to develop Request for Information (RFI) and Request for Proposal (RFP) documents by utilizing existing or creating custom templates
    • Facilitates discussion with key stakeholders to understand the business needs and articulate those needs through RFI and RFP documents
    • Present as subject matter expert through assisting key stakeholders to analyze, format, and present RFI and RFP responses to a variety of audiences using consistent formats
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders to develop creative solutions to meet UnityPoint Health’s pharmacy related business needs and concisely translates those solutions into agreements
    • Initiates with legal to ensure appropriate the appropriate terms and conditions are in place to mitigate legal and pharmacy business risks
    • Develops standard terms and conditions to be included in all new agreements and revises those as needed to account for changes to UnityPoint Health’s pharmacy business needs
    • Manages the contracting relationship with strategic vendors by leveraging the overall scope to maximize cost reduction opportunities and achieve terms that are beneficial to the organization
  • Effectively negotiates with vendors to achieve the needs of UnityPoint Health



  • Bachelors inPharmacy
  • Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or B.S. Pharmacy and current State licensure in IA, IL, or WI preferred.
  • Advanced degree (MHA, MBA, etc) or Pharmacy Residency in Pharmacy Healthcare Administration preferred.


  • Experience in excess of ten (10) years in pharmacy operations may be substituted for pharmacy specific education
  • Progressive leadership experience in pharmacy or closely related healthcare field.


  • Ability to take initiative and exercise independent judgement, decision making and problem solving expertise.
  • Strong leadership skills including professionalism, interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and negotiate effectively through written and verbal methods with varied audiences
  • Demonstrated ability with process improvement.
