The chosen candidate for this role may sit in Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, or Quad Cities region. There will be travel required between the three locations for oversight.


The Manager of the Referral Center provides leadership to staff across multiple regions to ensure effective operations, optimal performance, and quality improvement of the UnityPoint referral center staff. This manager partners with leaders in operations, clinic technologies, IT, analytics, and revenue cycle to support the ongoing development of a high performing organization. This individual will engage with clinical and operational leaders to coordinate referral management programs to support sustainable achievement of the system’s referral management objectives in support of the triple aim.



Referral Management


  • Coordinate services and resources with other referral center managers.
  • Collaborate with UPC Operational leaders to maintain open communication between the referral centers and the supported clinics leaders, providers and clinic staff.
  • Collaborate with UPC and UPH leaders to support referral management efforts and connections across the care continuum.
  • Establish and maintain close relationships with operations leaders and meet expectations of mutually developed SLA.
  • Establish and maintain a close relationship with the ACO leaders to ensure ACO related information is as accurate as possible.  
  • Identify best practices from each region and work to implement and standardize those best practices across all regions (as appropriate).
  • Develop and maintain appropriate training and educational resources for the referral management team members and clinic staff.
  • Acts as a liaison between UnityPoint and all (internal and external) referral sources.


Talent Management


·         Directly Manages the Referral Center Operational Leads and Referral Specialists as assigned. 

·         Responsible for recruitment of top talent and meet program needs with a customer focused mentality.

·         Ensures all team members are oriented and properly trained.

·         Implements effective performance management and staff development processes.

·         Establishes effective mechanisms of communication with staff and key stakeholders to foster an environment of openness, trust and teamwork.

·         Assists in the annual budget process.

·         Analyzes and requests staff expenditures within budget parameters

·         Provide leadership and direction that ensures top of licensure duties for referral management team members.



Continuous Process Improvement


·         Utilize the referral toolkit, stratification and other tools/reports to identify opportunities for improvement of referral management strategies.

·         Work with cross-functional departments to develop and maintain a referral productivity model to monitor work queue and user level productivity.

·         Coordinate with Ambulatory Informatics on continuous process improvement opportunities related to EHR-related issues.

·         Maintains current knowledge of payer specific requirements of prior authorizations by attending virtual workshops, researching and reading newsletters to work to create a more effective future process for obtaining prior-authorizations.

·         Collaborate with revenue cycle staff to develop a tracking mechanism to decrease prior-authorization write-offs.

·         Create a culture of innovation to push the envelope in all aspects regarding referral management.

·         Partner with UP staff and providers to identify obstacles to performance improvement and assigns resources to address them as appropriate.




Minimum Requirements

·         Bachelor’s Degree 

·         Master’s Degree Preferred






·         2 years previous supervisory experience

·         2-4 years previous experience in medical field


·         Experience with insurance verification/pre-authorizations.

·         Basic knowledge of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and International Classification of Disease (ICD-10) coding

·         Basic knowledge of referral process

·         Basic experience with EHR platform






·         Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.







·         Strong communication and organizational skills and ability to interact effectively with internal/external customers.

·         Proficiency in use of computer applications (Microsoft Office) and reporting tools.

·         Demonstrated capacity to problem solve in complex situations.

·         Strong self-motivation and ability to work independently.

·         Ability to function effectively as a team leader in a team based environment and build consensus.

·         Customer/patient focused.

·         Capable of basic data analysis

·         Ability to understand and apply guidelines, policies and procedures.






·         Ability to travel to assigned regions, other UPH or community facilities.  May drive a UPH vehicle, rental or own vehicle. 

·         Ability to work evenings and weekends when necessary to meet business needs of the department.

·         Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
