Position Summary:


The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Health Care Information Systems is seeking a Lead Application Developer as Manager – Health Care Data & Analytics, to provide leadership a team of developers engaged in the acquisition, analysis, validation of internal and external data sets in support of the healthcare enterprise.  The work of the unit supports all aspects of reporting and analytics including quality metrics, process improvement, utilization and enterprise dashboards for both clinical and financial measurements, monitors, outcomes and results.  Partners with customers and employees, internally and externally, to HCIS to drive reporting initiatives, performance and delivery.

Core job duties include:

  • Manage large scale and/or multiple interdependent projects and services across multiple functional areas that have enterprise-wide implications.
  • Identify resources needed; develop schedules and methods for measuring results.
  • Develop work plans and time schedules for large-scale projects.  Monitor progress and modify schedule and plan as needed. 
  • Act as a liaison with key customers and facilitate customer interactions and grow relationships.
  • Prepare special and periodic reports to senior leadership. Assist in the development of short-range and long-term goals to meet strategic information technology goals.
  • Recommend measures to improve service delivery, scheduling, and quality control.
  • Establish new and modify existing procedures and workflow to make effective use of available technologies to increase unit efficiency and improve customer satisfaction.
  • Provide expert technical support on hardware and software applications used by the UI Health Care enterprise. 
  • Influence decision making at the department/enterprise level.
  • Provide administrative and/or functional supervision over assigned staff, including coaching, mentoring, employee development and performance management.

Pay Grade:

Salary: $80,000 to commensurate – 6B

Position Qualifications:


Education Required:

Bachelor’s degree Computer Science, MIS, Informatics or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and related healthcare application experience and technical certifications.

Experience Required:

  • Experience (typically 7-10 years) in the development and management of BI reporting.
  • Experience providing consultative and analytical support including design, implementation, coordination, and data querying to support patient outcome, operations, and financial improvement.
  • Broad knowledge of data warehousing concepts, data marts, business intelligence (BI) solutions, and SQL.
  • Demonstrated experience in team management, supervision/management, performance management, career development.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing, with technical and non-technical staff.
  • Excellent communication skills at the verbal, written and presentation levels.
  • Demonstrated job-related experience with and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Informatics or related discipline is highly desirable.
  • Experience in managing relationships with a wide customer base spanning both hospital operations/analytics and research.
  • Proficiency with the MS Suite of products to include MS WORD, EXCEL, Outlook, Project, Sharepoint and Visio.
  • Experience in a large academic medical center environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with any of the following workflows: clinical pathology, microbiology, anatomic pathology, outreach, blood banking
