Hall & Hall Engineers is seeking a Professional Land Surveyor. The position requires thorough knowledge of land surveying principles and practices. Responsible for preparing, reviewing and certifying boundary surveys.  Responsible for oversight of construction surveys, field surveyors and client contacts.

Responsible and accountable to ensure that all assigned personnel are coordinating their activities with other project participants and that the requirements of the Contract are being satisfied. Must have sufficient technical knowledge and awareness of details to be able to recognize when technical problems are developing in the various disciplines, and to initiate appropriate corrective actions.

Typical Duties

Typical duties will include but not be limited to the following:

  • Property Research
  • Boundary calculations.
  • Acquisition plats and easement exhibits.
  • Preliminary and final plats.
  • Preparing legal descriptions
  • Retracement plats-of-survey, ALTA surveys and other surveying documents.
  • Review work prepared by Design Surveyors and Field Surveyors.
  • Survey related project proposals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:

  • Prepare land surveying calculations and documents using governing codes and standards of practice.
  • Plans, organizes, and coordinates own work as well as work of Field and Design Surveyors.
  • Research land surveying records and document findings.
  • Serve as project manager and client contact for land survey projects.
  • Coordinate work with other disciplines such as architectural, civil, etc.
  • Handle routine consulting contract administration.
  • Use CAD to prepare survey and mapping drawings.
  • Participate in client and company meetings.
  • Operate survey equipment to perform boundary and construction surveys.
  • Organize project files.
  • Assure that deliverables are in accordance with HHE standards.

Education/Experience

  • Graduation from accredited college with an Associate's Degree or Certificate in Engineering or Surveying Technology or other technical field that can result in licensure; or
  • Bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying or Civil Engineering; and
  • Experience: At least four years of progressively responsible land surveying experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience in a boundary research and platting procedures is required. Three years must have been in providing technical leadership and direction to subordinate survey staff and support personnel in the preparation of plats and legal documents

Skills and Special Requirements

  • AutoCAD required.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Suite is preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge in the operation of robotic total stations and GPS is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Iowa Code regarding land surveying is required.
  • Ability to obtain OSHA 10-hour Construction Outreach
  • Valid Iowa Driver's License is required.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Work over 40 hours per week may be necessary as workload dictates. This may include weekdays and/or weekends.
  • Sufficient mobility which permits the employee to traverse construction sites with rough terrain and trenches, is required.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, which permits effective communication.
  • Background screening including previous employment, education, criminal history, and driving record verification.
  • Job will generally be performed in an office environment, but may require travel to visit a Client’s office, production facility or industrial/construction job site. Conditions will vary at each location, but the conditions listed above will generally apply.
  • When performing work outside HHE’s office, appropriate safety training and safety equipment may be required. HHE will provide hard hat, goggles, high visibility vests, ear plugs and disposable gloves. Additional safety gear may be required by employee.
