Automation Engineer I
Reports to: Manager of Automation Development

Purpose statement:
The Automation Engineer I is responsible for developing high quality automated solutions for IDT processes within the Operations departments. This position is responsible for understanding the manufacturing process, gathering requirements, developing and validating new automated systems. The major focus will be on liquid handling systems and equipment that integrates with the liquid handling processes.
Essential Functions:
Assists with the design and implements integrated, automated solutions within IDT systems
Develops application specific protocols for liquid handlers and other instrumentation
Performs basic troubleshooting and other sustaining activities to keep automated solutions operating optimally
Provides training for end users and support staff
Develops performance indicators for process automation and creates preventative maintenance protocols
Maintains technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, and reviewing technical publications.
Optimizes liquid handling performance of instrumentation.
Researches and provides recommendations for instrumentation to be used in automation of IDT processes
Performs testing and validation of automated systems
Audits automated processes to ensure best practices are in use
Works with department and project teams to develop and implement automated solutions
Collaborates with external vendors to identify, demo, and implement new automated solutions at IDT

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering, related field, or Associate's degree with equivalent experience
Professional Experience:
Experience in instrument integration and automation required
Lab experience using liquid handlers and other automated lab equipment required
Programming experience of Hamilton and/or other liquid handling platforms preferred
Experience using Microsoft Excel required
Programming experience in an object-oriented and/or scripting language preferred
Data analysis or statistics experience preferred
Experience with JMP data analysis preferred

Demonstrated experience working in a team-oriented environment required.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to work non-standard hours as required to provide automation support
Adaptability to performing under stress when confronted with emergent, critical, unusual, or dangerous situations, or situation in which working speed and sustained attention are make-or-break aspects of the job.
Ability to communicate effectively using a variety of styles and techniques appropriate to the audience

Physical Requirements:
Exert up to 20-50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10-15 lbs. a minimal amount frequently
Visual Acuity:
Work requires close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Ability to read pertinent printed material and distinguish colors.
Ability to accurately read measurements on equipment.
Ability to prepare and read written documentation; use of computer.
