Field Service Engineer

Reports to: Manager of DES Fast Impact Team

Purpose Statement:

The Field Service Engineer is responsible for providing critical technical support to product development and management teams by developing and testing solutions for machine controls, electrical, and mechanical to support custom manufacturing of IDT’s innovative biology products.

Essential Functions:

  • Works closely with internal customers, product development and management teams to identify, implement, and validate fast impact improvements in currently installed systems.

  • Works with product development teams to implement fast impact improvements into new designs. Products include combinations of pneumatic, liquid handling and mechanical systems, actuators, sensors, vison and robotic systems controlled by PLC’s, analog, digital and/or industrial control systems.

  • Capable of handling advanced issues, troubleshooting, installation, validation, maintenance, and service repairs independently.

  • Troubleshoot systems including the following: PLC software, HMI software, SCADA systems, PCB, control panel, electrical schematics, panel layouts, and product bill of materials.

  • Document and report all activities according to design standards.

  • Works with the Industrial Automation team to follow standards for machine controls and safety systems.

  • Understand and complies with safety design standards such as CE Compliance, risk assessments and relevant sections of the NEC, OSHA, EPA and NFPA codes.

  • Works with product development teams to assemble, test design work as needed.

  • Works in Assembly to assist Manufacturing and Operations (MAA) with machine builds as needed.

  • Works closely and in conjunction with Industrial Automation engineers to develop efficient product integrations with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and engineering databases.  

  • Participates in periodic project reviews to keep projects on track and provides reports to managers

  • Verifies and validates electrical and software designs meet performance requirements.

  • Contributes proactively to the project planning and scheduling. Works with project managers, consultants and management to achieve on-time product deliveries.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or other STEM fields required; Advanced degree preferred

  • Engineer with minimum of two or more years of electrical engineering and software development experience in industrial or laboratory automation required. 

Professional Experience:

  • In-depth understanding of computer software, databases and programming required.

  • Proficiency in automation equipment/system design prototyping testing and troubleshooting required.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with software writing tools, version controls and other modern engineering software applications including proficiency with PLC programming required.

  • Experience with Beckhoff TwinCat/EtherCat or similar structured text control systems preferred.

  • Experience with Unitronic or similar ladder logic control systems preferred.

  • Experience with OPC preferred.

Seldom (Up to 5%)

Physical Requirements:

Exert 20-50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or 10-15 lbs. of force frequently

Visual Acuity:

  • Work requires close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

  • Ability to read pertinent printed material and distinguish colors.

  • Ability to accurately read measurements on equipment.

  • Ability to prepare and read written documentation; use of computer.
