JOB GOAL:

Kirkwood is seeking a guitar instructor to join the growing music area, beginning Fall 2024, on the Cedar Rapids Main Campus.

Pay is $1,294 per credit hour.   
 
GENERAL JOB SUMMARY: 
The instructor is responsible for fostering student learning through effective teaching of private music lessons, and working collaboratively with students and ensembles.  Teaching responsibilities include teaching applied guitar to music program and transfer students, and facilitating sophomore recitals for guitar students in collaboration with the director of instrumental music. The candidate will have the opportunity to engage collaboratively with both faculty and students in recital and performance preparation. The ideal candidate will have the ability to teach effectively and show evidence of successful studio teaching, preferable at the post-secondary level. This position consists of a varied schedule dependent upon enrollment during the academic year.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach applied lessons each week 
  • Assist in preparing students for juries and recitals through collaboration.
  • Coordinate with students to establish a regular meeting schedule for the semester.
  • Maintain current course syllabi and provide it to all students taught.
  • Effectively organize and teach assigned music lessons in accordance with established syllabi.
  • Make recommendations concerning curriculum revision and development.

  • Communicate clearly expectations for collaboration with other applied music instructors, and students.
  • Be able and willing to represent the college in the most positive manner with prospective, former and current students, clients, suppliers and the community we serve.
  • Be able to organize and present music concepts to a wide range of students with varying backgrounds and abilities, and adjust teaching techniques accordingly.
  • Manage the lesson studio in a manner that is acceptable and consistent with the department and college objectives, guidelines, policies, and practices.
  • Assume responsibility, deal effectively with problems, and exercise independent judgment when making decisions.

Position involves sitting and/or standing most of the time in a studio setting.  Frequent (34-66%) repetitive motion, stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying and exerting up to 10 pounds. Also, frequent (34-66%) reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping. Constant (67-100%) talking, hearing and viewing various types of close work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Music (MM) degree in guitar performance or Jazz studies, 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Higher Education teaching experience
  • Demonstrated collaborative experience in a variety of musical genres
