Health Educator

Basic Function and Responsibilities: 

Under the supervision of the Prevention Program Director, provide health education services and sexual health education and training with multiple collaborative providers and youth participants in community and school settings that includes activities designed to prevent adolescent pregnancy and promote good health habits. 

Characteristic Duties:

  1. Provide comprehensive curriculum and evidence-based health education and sexuality education in school and community settings. This includes providing age-appropriate comprehensive sexual health education to all 5th, 7th, and 9th graders in the Iowa Community School District.
  2. Collaborate and communicate effectively with schools and agencies to coordinate schedules and curriculum delivery.
  3. Collaborate with other UAY staff to provide youth development programming at the Youth Center, schools, and in the community enhancing leadership opportunities for young people.
  4. Provide youth with resources and referrals for age-appropriate health education information, family planning and sexual health services.
  5. Provide presentations to PTO groups, the faith community, and other community groups on health education issues, including age-appropriate sexual behavior, and improving parent/child communications about health issues.
  6. Provide teacher in-service trainings on best-practices in health education including teaching age-appropriate sexual health education.
  7. Complete necessary paperwork and assist with quarterly reports.
  8. Work with a team approach, collaborating with the Youth Development Team and other UAY staff through participation in weekly team meetings, and bi-weekly staff meetings.

Related Duties:

  1. Perform other tasks as assigned by the Prevention Program Director.
  2. Develop and maintain knowledge of resources, services, and opportunities available to youth and families.

Qualifications:  Masters level education in Public Health preferred, or a Bachelors level in Public Health, Social Work, or related human services field; prior experience in health education with youth and in community settings or significant prior experience in youth services.  Demonstrated experience in community collaboration, communication skills, work with social media platforms, utilization of experiential education concepts, and group facilitation skills.

A Valid Driver’s License is required.

This program runs September through May, with June, July, and August off. Salary is based on a 9 month year, starting salary for the 9 months is $35,000 with full benefits.
