GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

Under minimal supervision, Kirkwood Community College is seeking an instructor to teach fully in-person Communication classes on the Main Campus in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and at the Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa in Coralville, Iowa starting Fall 2023. Meeting days and times vary.
 
The instructor must evaluate, record, and report student achievement and progress in assigned courses in accordance with department, division, and College policies and procedures.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Constant (67-100%)

  • Effectively organize and teach Fundamentals of Oral Communication and Public Speaking in accordance with established and/or developed syllabi.
  • Maintain current course syllabi for all courses taught.  File a current copy of the syllabus at the beginning of each term in accordance with department guidelines.
  • Effectively organize and prepare learning activities for assigned courses in accordance with established syllabi.
  • Evaluate, record, and share student performance and progress on a regular basis and provide students with timely feedback.
  • Make student referrals when deemed necessary to the other college personnel such as the dean, counselor, Financial Aid, etc., for more specialized information and assistance.

  • Communicate in advance to staff, dean, and associate dean when class is canceled, moved to another location (such as the library) or taught by someone other than you.
  • Send or submit your course syllabi to the office staff at the beginning of each semester.
  • Check rosters to ensure that students in your section are registered for your section.
  • Report attendance for financial aid purposes.
  • Respond to students and to their work in a civil and timely fashion.
  • Report midterm grades and final grades accurately and by the published deadlines.
  • Respond to staff questions about scheduling matters.
  • Respond to staff questions for book orders.
  • Respond to staff and administrative communications about individual students.
  • Respond with data for the department assessment projects.
  • Attend your Kirkwood email each weekday.


PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves sitting and/or standing most of the time in a classroom setting.  Occasional (10-33%) repetitive motion, stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying and lifting up to 20 pounds.  Frequent (34-66%) reaching, standing, walking, lifting and grasping.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree conferred from an accredited institution in communication or a related field with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the communication discipline. Specific coursework in communication theory, interpersonal communication, persuasion, and similar coursework. 
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:
  • Familiarity and experience with teaching college communication and public speaking at all levels
  • Experience teaching both written and oral communications.
  • Familiarity or experience with teaching at a community college.
  • Coursework in college pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated experience working with English Language Learners.
  • Experience with online course development and delivery. 
  • Demonstrated successful application of active and collaborative teaching strategies.
