The Distance and Online Education instructional design team is seeking a Lead Instructional Designer to utilize adult learning theory and instructional design methods to support online teaching and learning at Iowa. You may be an ideal candidate if you are a highly motivated team player who values working in partnership with a team of creative, results-driven professionals and has a strong background and skills in communicating with faculty (or similar) and technical skills in online education platforms and curriculum consultation, especially with higher education courses. This is a 100% effort, on-site position with full benefits.

In this lead role you will work within a collaborative team to support the development of online instructors and courses at Iowa, advocate for effective approaches to online teaching and learning, provide ongoing faculty training and professional development, and investigate emerging trends in education, online teaching, and research to advance our field and work. You will partner directly with faculty to plan, build, and teach more engaging, inclusive online courses.

You will apply instructional design principles to:
1.    Lead faculty in the process of creating new and transitioning on-campus courses to instructionally sound, effective online offerings.
2.    Evaluate instructional effectiveness and recommend instructional and assessment strategies to support course goals and objectives.
3.    Guide faculty in the process of organizing and chunking course content for online delivery.
4.    Design and develop instructional materials.
5.    Utilize quality standards to develop courses that are accessible, easy to use and navigate.

The University of Iowa partners with colleges and departments throughout the university to provide support for all online courses and instructors at Iowa. Instructors teaching online courses request targeted support or full course design and development services. Instructional Designers serve as a key part of the larger Instructional Development team at Distance and Online. In this role, you will work alongside Distance and Online course administration, media production, and exams services teams to support effective online instruction at Iowa. 

Minimum Required Education, Experience and Competencies:

  • A Master’s Degree in Instructional Design,Education or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience (typically 3-5 years) in course design and development. Strong understanding of instructional design concepts and principles, effective approaches to online teaching and learning, active learning strategies, and methodologies for evaluation and assessment. Experience working with online instructional technologies and ability to learn and apply new technologies quickly and effectively.

Demonstrates a in the ability to:

  • Determine and execute relevant instructional design concepts and processes.
  • Guide faculty in the application of quality online instruction and adult learning principles during the development of distance and online courses.
  • Recommend and implement solutions to complex instructional development problems. Brainstorm innovative instructional strategies to meet the needs of different types of learners and environments.
  • Design instructional content to meet the learning needs of a target population.
  • Evaluate academic assessment methods and activities, assess research and instructional programs, and review student learning outcomes to ensure achievement of academic objectives and strategies.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects or activities and effectively prioritize and allocate time and resources. Oversee instructional development projects from start to finish.
  • Form constructive and collaborative relationships with faculty and staff. Effectively communicate using strong written and verbal English grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage, and pronunciation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience (typically 5+ years) in asynchronous online course design and development. Prior experience managing multiple instructional design projects, and experience within a higher education environment. Able to produce innovative, high-quality results.

Demonstrates a in:

  • Instructional technologies used in higher education settings such as: Learning Management Systems, lecture capture, and virtual meeting software (e.g., Canvas, Panopto, Zoom).

Demonstrates an Extensive proficiency level in:

  • Advanced presentation, writing, and project management skills. Listen, learn, and lead within an integrated team of diverse stakeholders.
  • Power user of Learning Management Systems and various digital technology tools used to develop and support interactive teaching and learning
  • Designing and delivering in-person/virtual training and faculty development.

*NOTE: This position will hire within the advertised salary range of $60,000-$70,000.
