The College of Nursing at The University of Iowa (UI) invites applications for a Strategic Communications and External Relations Director who will direct, develop, promote, and implement strategies and programs proactively to strengthen and maintain the college’s positive image, constituent relations and advancement activities in the college, on the University of Iowa campus, and through-out the state.

The director will develop and manage relationships with constituency groups e.g. University colleagues, alumni, employers, donors, corporate partners, and legislators. This goal is to be accomplished through effective communications, innovative programs, events, and projects and collaborative teamwork while concurrently engaging and aligning with the University of Iowa and Office of Strategic Communications policies and procedures. Additional duties to include:

Strategic Planning: Create and implement strategic communication and external relations vision and policies. Assess and report on progress towards external relations and marketing goals. Align communication and external relations with collegiate strategic planning and goals.

Message Development and Implementation: Determine and develop College brand identity/message that encompasses and represents the diverse missions of the College of Nursing. Oversee brand integration throughout communication tools and materials. Manage all communication materials through all media. Provide collegiate specific information for fundraising communication materials. Implement strategies for assessing effectiveness of messaging including cost benefit. Develop and implement targeted messages to specific audiences, working collaboratively with teams and individuals in the college to effectively promote programs, events, recruiting, etc. Develop and implement a plan for identifying and promoting accomplishments and activities of College faculty, staff, s tudents, and alumni.

Promoting Visibility for the College at the University of Iowa: Develop and manage relationships with constituency groups e.g. University colleagues, alumni, employers, donors, corporate partners, and legislators. Represent the college on internal and/or external committees, agencies, and associations. Serve as college liaison to the UI Center for Advancement. Oversee the development of nomination materials for the alumni award program of the College and of the UI Center for Advancement. Develop reports as needed for the alumni representative to the UI Center for Advancement.

External Public Relations: Develop communications as requested by UI Office of Governmental Relations for state and federal levels. Oversee the implementation of campus or external relations activities related to governmental relations as they arise. Plan and implement engagement activities and events, on and off campus, related to constituency groups (e.g., Young Alumni Board, Legislation Day, Community College Articulation Agreements). Develop and submit requested reports to the UI Center for Advancement related to donor stewardship. Coordinate, in concert with the dean, stewardship activities (e.g. communications, meetings, acknowledgments).

Information Management: Develop and implement a plan for response to and requests for College of Nursing information and expertise. In collaboration with leadership, makes decisions regarding information management. Executes informational sessions on media coverage as appropriate. Responsible for developing and packaging annual collegiate report and other review reports as requested.

Financial Responsibility: Responsible to oversee strategic communication budget including working with appropriate vendors. Provide final approval for financial transactions and purchasing. Create a system for effective monitoring of inventory and budgeting.

Leadership/Supervision: Supervise staff and student employees. Work collaboratively with teams and individuals in the College of Nursing to effectively promote programs, events, messaging, and recruiting. Assess effectiveness and manage operational improvement plans. Determine the need for out-sourcing of projects and/or targeted job elements as appropriate based on skills needed or other circumstances.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field, i.e., communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three or more years of experience in the design and execution of marketing, communications and/or public relations strategy/activities
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in timely communication of current events and customer service. Successful experience writing press releases, social media, creating state-of-the art presentations, and/or manage media campaigns, and electronic print media.
  • Proficiency in computer software applications.
  • Committed to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional team.
  • Successful experience managing people and teams.
  • Experience in design and coordination of production of strategic communications via a variety of mediums, including social media, print, and websites.
  • Commitment to promoting a diverse environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of alumni relations, government relations, and/or corporate relations strategies and best practices.
  • Budget development and management.
  • Knowledge of strategic communications and marketing in a higher education institution.
