2019-20 Kids on Course AmeriCorps Full-time, One-year Member POSITION DESCRIPTION – at Elementary, Middle School, or High School

Service Position Summary:  Members serve 1,700 hours (approximately 35-45 hours a week) at their respective sites over the course of 51 weeks. Each FT Kids on Course AmeriCorps Middle School Member will serve at one of our middle school partners, including Roosevelt, or Wilson where they will serve students through academic and social emotional learning activities to improve reading and math skills. Members at Elementary sites will serve at either Van Buren, Grant, Hoover, or Harrison. Members at High School Sites will serve at either Jefferson or Kennedy. AmeriCorps members will have the opportunity to lead student enrichment, STEAM, and tutoring activities throughout the school year and summer programming. Host sites may change as the program shifts into summer programming.
 
Duties:
  • Perform in-class, small group, and 1-on-1 tutoring sessions with struggling learners and document these sessions in Microsoft Excel
  • Lead enrichment programming at their respective site in conjunction with Kids on Course Learning Lab school year program and elementary Kids on Course University, Middle School Scholar Camp, or High School Boot Camp summer programs
  • Perform Check and Connect sessions with students to assess behaviors, needs, and participation
  • Perform scheduled mentoring activities such as lunch buddies
  • Serve as a member of a site team to organize and implement large scale events promoting education or engagement
  • Manage and recruit volunteers to assist in literacy interventions, read to children, pack and distribute weekend food bags, and provide enrichment activities
  • Student transportation support for after school and summer programs
  • This program may require the member to engage in additional allowable activities that support the AmeriCorps program design, and which help the program meet its goals.  In no circumstance, will members be asked or allowed to perform prohibited activities.
 
Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Communicate with teachers and site staff regarding student schedules, interventions and progress
  • Attend initial orientation and training at the Kids on Course office and placement sites
  • Attend monthly Kids on Course AmeriCorps meetings and AmeriCorps required trainings
  • Attend site-sponsored activities and trainings 
  • Responsible for own transportation to placement site(s), Kids on Course office, and other meetings, events, or outreach scheduled in the community
  • Complete professional development plan
  • Complete mid-term and end of year evaluations
  • This position has recurring access to vulnerable populations and requires a three-part background check.
  • Ability to complete 1,700 service hours in 51 weeks. Flexible start dates: earliest start date / end date August 19, 2019 – August 7, 2020. Latest start date / end date is 11/30/19 – 11/20/2020.
  • During the school year, Full-Time members will serve 35-45 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Service will occur between the hours of 7:30AM – 6:00PM (earliest and latest start & end time) depending on the site. Members serve 8-9 hours a day Mon-Thurs, and 6-8 hours on Fridays. While members are expected to take a lunch break, they may occasionally lead enrichment or engagement opportunities during the lunch hour. Occasional nights and weekends may apply to accommodate events, enrichment, trainings, and meetings. During the summer, hours may vary, but will occur between the hours of 7:00AM – 6:00PM, Monday through Friday, except to accommodate occasional events, enrichment, trainings, and meetings.
  • High school diploma or GED; must be at least 17 years old

Typical day / week:
Elementary: Monday – Thursday (similar at Middle & High School)
Arrive at 8:30
8:30-2:30 tutor kids in small groups, in class, or 1-on-1
2:30-3:30 prepare for after school Learning Lab program
3:30-4:10 Learning Lab snack & brain break time
4:10-5:10 lead small groups of kids in enrichment or academic lessons
5:10-5:30 Student Transportation Support
Friday (similar at Middle & High School)
Arrive at 8:30
8:30-1 pm tutor kids in small groups, in class, or 1-on-1
1-2 pm distribute weekend food bags to food-insecure students
2-3 pm wrap up documentation for the week

Occasional events: college visits with students, family night events, home visits to KOC families with Site Manager

Note: Holiday, sick, and vacation (leave) time does time not count toward the hours needed to complete member terms. Members are responsible for acquiring their hours and must try to plan for any absences.

This position will be part of a team of AmeriCorps members based at local schools providing support and developing resources for children and their families to reduce the achievement gap in the Cedar Rapids community. Kids on Course AmeriCorps members will receive support through ongoing meetings, planning sessions and training. Project members work in conjunction with Kids on Course, the Cedar Rapids Community School District and other local non-profits.
