Adjunct Instructor, Applied Music- Low Brass

The instructor is responsible for fostering student learning through effectively teaching private music lessons in the Kirkwood liberal arts music curriculum.  Teaching responsibilities include offering lessons to students of various skill levels and experience, planning lesson activities, demonstrating appropriate techniques, and evaluating and reposting student performance and progress. The ideal candidate will teach effectively in a variety of musical styles and ability levels, and show evidence of successful studio teaching at the college level. Candidates should also demonstrate proven artistry as a performer.

  • Teach applied lessons each week.
  • Assist in preparing students for juries and recitals.
  • Coordinate with students to establish a regular meeting schedule for the semester.
  • Maintain current course syllabi and provide it to all students taught.
  • Teach a weekly performance seminar to music transfer students that includes brass, percussion, piano, and woodwind students.
  • Effectively organize and teach assigned music lessons in accordance with established syllabi.
  • Make recommendations concerning curriculum revision and development.Ability to effectively communicate with other applied instructors and with four-year schools about curriculum and student expectations.
  • Demonstrate excellence of technique and professionalism as a musician
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with diverse personalities
  • Be able and willing to represent the college in the most positive manner with prospective, former and current students, clients, suppliers and the community we serve.
  • Be able to organize and present low brass music and music concepts to a wide range of students with varying backgrounds and abilities, and adjust teaching techniques accordingly.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback and guidance to students in brass, percussion, piano, and woodwind areas.
  • Manage the lesson studio and performance seminar in a manner that is acceptable and consistent with the department and college objectives, guidelines, policies, and practices.
  • Assume responsibility, deal effectively with problems, and exercise independent judgment when making decisions.

                             Position involves sitting and/or standing most of the time in a studio setting.  Frequent (34-66%) repetitive motion, stooping, crouching, pushing, puling, carrying and exerting up to 10 pounds.  Also frequent (34-66%) reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping. Constant (67-100%) talking, hearing and viewing various types of close work.                             
  • Master of Music or Master of Arts degree in Trombone, Euphonium, or Tuba performance.
  • Experience teaching college level trombone, tuba and euphonium.
  • DMA or PhD in Music- Trombone, Euphonium, or Tuba Performance or Pedagogy
  • Professional Performance experience on Trombone, Tuba and Euphonium
  • Ability to demonstrate successful teaching in both classical, jazz, and popular idioms.
  • Outstanding leadership, organizational and communication skills .
