Instructor, Life Skills

Kirkwood Community College

Under limited supervision, the Instructor is responsible for teaching life skills, literacy and HSED (High School Equivalency Diploma) subject areas (reading, writing, social studies) at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center (IMCC.) This is a 28 hour per week position for 50 weeks per year.

Limited Term Position Continuation of this position is contingent upon future funding from the Iowa Department of Corrections

  • Effectively teach life skills, literacy and HSED subject areas to eligible offenders in a variety of instructional formats, particularly with youthful offender population.
  • Maintain student and program records for reporting purposes.
  • Collaborate with fellow instructors at IMCC, as well as in the Department of Corrections, on the development of innovate curricula for offenders.
  • Act as a liaison among the Iowa Department of Corrections, IMCC, and Kirkwood Community College, supporting the operations of IMCC.
  • Perform other related work duties as assigned.
  • Be able and willing to represent the College in the most positive manner with prospective, former, and current students, clients, suppliers, and the community we serve.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with peer team members, students, and staff.
  • Possess strong human relations skills and be able to interact with diverse personalities.
  • Communicate clearly, concisely, logically, and coherently orally and in writing.
  • Deal responsibly and effectively with problems, and exercise independent judgment when making decisions.
  • Possess ability to adapt to a work situation inside a medium/maximum security institution housing convicted offenders.

  • Bachelors degree with successful teaching experience is required.
  • In addition, candidates must pass IMCC security clearance.
  • A current Iowa standard teaching license is preferred.
