Under minimal supervision, the Lead Studio Technician will be expected to manage the daily operations of the 3D Art studios and classrooms in the Arts and Humanities Department, including studios in ceramics, glass, and sculpture.  The position requires a background in studio art including background in studio management.  In addition, the individual must have strong organizational skills and the ability to work with a high degree of independent judgment.

  • Coordinates studio needs and activities that support the curriculum, including but not limited to preparing the studios for use at the beginning of each semester, ensuring effective and safe utilization of the studios during the semester, and coordinating the end of the semester clean up and closing of the studios for winter and summer break.
  • Coordinates studio needs and activities that support non-credit offerings, including but not limited to being the primary contact regarding studio needs for non-credit classes, preparing the studios for use at the beginning of each new course, communicating studio policies and procedures to instructors, and facilitating effective co-use of the studio space.
  • Manage, maintain, and repair studio tools and equipment, including documentation of upkeep and maintenance schedules.
  • Maintain and monitor supplies and inventory.
  • Keep outdoor areas and studios organized and clean.
  • Establish, monitor and support all safety procedures, which must be approved by the dean and kept on file in the Arts and Humanities office for updates to all generic syllabi. This will include safety issues in the studios such as labeling, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials, equipment instructions and warnings, appropriate procedures for the studios, and maintenance of first aid kits.
  • Provide a review of safety procedures annually to all staff and faculty using the studio. 
  • Coordinate the scheduling, organization, and staffing of the wood-fire kilns.
  • Assist the Glass and Ceramic Instructors as needed.
  • Monitor open studios during an established schedule.
  • Supervision of studio technician and student labor.
  • Perform other related work duties as assigned.
  • Team leader that's self-motivated, detailed oriented with exceptional organizational skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of how art studios function in an academic setting.
  • Assume responsibility; deal effectively with problems and exercise independent judgment when making decisions.
  • Able to prioritize and complete task as required.
  • Must be willing to work Saturdays and evenings on a recurring basis to support Continuing Education courses when offered.
  • Interact well with a wide variety of stakeholders including administrators, faculty, staff, students and other college partners.
  • Must be able to work effectively in an environment where work interruptions occur frequently, where work on multiple projects is common, and where timelines on project completion are tight.

  • Medium to heavy work. 
  • Position involves lifting up to 50 pounds daily; up to 20 pounds frequently (34-66%); and up to 10 pounds constantly (67-100%) to move objects.
  • Physically able to perform routine stooping, bending, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions constantly (67-100%).
  • Occasional (10-33%) kneeling and crawling.

Potentially subject to chemicals; moving mechanical parts; electrical current; working on scaffolding; atmospheric conditions that may affect the respiratory system or the skin; fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation; noise; and vibration; and inside and outside environmental conditions.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Art or an art related field or 3 years related full-time experience in a studio setting.
  • Demonstrate expertise in the safe and proper utilization of diverse glass and ceramics studio materials, tools and equipment as well as methods of making.
  • Self-directed initiative to learn and research information about materials and equipment as needed to support the glass, ceramics, and sculpture studios.
  • MA or MFA in Ceramics or Glass
  • Minimum of 3 years experience.
  • Prior experience supervising employees.
  • Able to work independently, accept responsibility with limited supervision, manage tasks to completion, and work with frequent interruptions. 
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and human relations skills.
