Kids on Course AmeriCorps Member Summer Opportunity – Kids on Course University

Service Position Summary: Do you love working with children and want to earn money over summer, but still have evenings and weekends free? This is the opportunity for you! It's perfect for recent high school grads and college students. As an AmeriCorps Member you'll earn nearly $2,500 in just nine weeks PLUS another $1,252.91 for college. Of course, Members have to complete the job and serve 300 hours (approximately 35-40 hours a week) to receive the full stipend and education award. You'll help children in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, become better readers through the Kids on Course University program.

AmeriCorps Members will have the opportunity to recruit volunteers to support the program, provide classroom aid to struggling learners, perform direct tutoring instruction, and lead enrichment activities designed to teach valuable skills. Members will also help eliminate the distraction of hunger, which can be a barrier to learning, by overseeing the Summer Meals and Summer Backpack Program at their respective sites. Last year, Kids on Course served more than 50,000 meals over the summer.

Duties:
Perform in-class and 1-on-1 tutoring sessions with struggling learners and document
these sessions in Microsoft Excel

Support enrichment programming

Perform Check and Connect sessions with students to assess behaviors, needs, and
participation

Perform scheduled mentoring activities such as lunch buddies

Assist with organizing and implementing large scale events promoting education or
engagement – such as family nights

Manage and recruit volunteers to assist in literacy interventions, read to children, pack
and distribute weekend food bags, and provide enrichment activities

Before and after KCU student transportation support

This program may require the member to engage in additional allowable activities that
support the AmeriCorps program design, and which help the program meet its goals. In
no circumstance, will members be asked or allowed to perform prohibited activities.

Qualifications and Requirements:
Communicate with teachers and site staff regarding student schedules, interventions
and progress

Attend initial orientation and training at the Kids on Course office and placement sites

Attend weekly Kids on Course AmeriCorps meetings and AmeriCorps required trainings

Attend monthly service projects and required Days of Service

Attend site-sponsored activities and trainings

Responsible for own transportation to placement site(s), Kids on Course office, and
other meetings, events, or outreach scheduled in the community

Complete professional development plan

Complete evaluations

This position has recurring access to vulnerable populations and requires a three-part
background check. ** Individuals for whom the criminal registry results are pending may be
selected for service but may not have unsupervised access to vulnerable populations until the
results are complete. Documentation should demonstrate that the Member and Supervisor were
informed of the restriction

Ability to complete 300 hours in 9 weeks – June 10, 2019 – August 9, 2019

During the summer, minimum-time members will serve 30-40 hours per week, Monday-
Friday. Service will occur between the hours of 7 am – 3 pm depending on the site,
except to accommodate occasional events, enrichment, trainings, and meetings. While
members are expected to take a lunch break, they may occasionally lead enrichment or
engagement opportunities during the lunch hour.

High school diploma or GED; must be at least 17 years old

U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident alien

Benefits:
Modest living allowance ($2450 total pre-tax—paid in even increments every-other
week during service)

Education award of up to $1252.91 upon successful completion of term

Student loan forbearance for qualified student loans

This position will be part of a team of AmeriCorps members based at local schools and
providing support and developing resources for children and their families to reduce the
achievement gap in the Cedar Rapids community. Kids on Course AmeriCorps members will
receive support through ongoing meetings, planning sessions and training. Project members
work in conjunction with Kids on Course, the Cedar Rapids Community School District and other
local non-profits.

Note: Holiday, sick, and vacation (leave) time does time not count toward the hours needed to
complete member terms. Members are responsible for acquiring their hours and must try to
plan for any absences.
