The YMCA is seeking a number of Child Care Counselors and as well as a part-time Side Coordinator for the Before and After School program at the elementary school level.  The position of Child Care Counselor holds the responsibility of safety and satisfaction within the particular site and site program. Children at the child care site will be actively engaged with their counselors in meaningful and productive play. For many program participants, the Child Care Counselor is the YMCA Child Care Program. The manner in which the Child Care Counselor performs the duties and functions of their position has everything to do with the satisfaction felt by participants and their families.

  • Possesses leadership, organizational, and communication skills
  • Has work experience in the area of education, counseling, or child care.
  • Meets the requirements set by the State of Iowa, Chapter 109.4 (3)

Minimum requirements are: (1) demonstrate competence in working independently with children; (2) a valid First Aid and CPR certificate for infants, children, and adults or ability to get said training; and (4) be at least 16 years of age (5) certification in Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting (6) a valid universal precautions certificate (7) ability to pass a criminal record check.

  • Has the ability to communicate the mission, goals, and policies of the YMCA and the YMCA Child Care program to the parents and participants.
  • Has the ability to exercise discretion, take initiative, and deal appropriately with confidential information.

  • Assist in planning, creating and maintaining a quality activity-based childcare program.
  • Plan, organize and lead activities for groups of youth of varying numbers.
  • Administer and encourage the Character Development program principles.
  • Provide excellent customer service; greet each child and parent/guardian every day.
  • Keeps material and equipment in good repair, and help to maintain inventory.
  • Maintain the Child Care area in a safe and clean condition, creating an atmosphere of “safety first” at all locations.
  • Maintain good parent-counselor relationships.
  • Participate in overall program evaluation.
  • Create and maintain a harmonious, positive working relationship with fellow staff, parents, and program participants.
  • Enforce safety rules and follow risk management guidelines.
  •  Promote and practice parent and agency confidentiality.
