Job Information:

Kirkwood Community College seeks a skilled and enthusiastic individual to join our team as an Adjunct Instructor for U.S. History.   The successful candidate will have strong knowledge base in their discipline and teaching experience at the college level is desirable.  The successful candidate will have strong knowledge base in their discipline. Teaching experience at the college level is desirable.  This is a non-tenure track adjunct faculty position beginning with Academic Year 2017-2018. Applicants must be available to teach daytime classes during the academic year.

COURSE:
U.S. History to 1877 (HIS-151)
  • September 18-December 14
  • Mon., Tues., Wed., Thurs.
  • 9:05-10:00 on Main Campus.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for the coordination, planning, preparing, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities.
  • Use subject matter expertise to lead discussions and help facilitate student learning during class.
  • Use subject matter expertise to provide accurate assessments of and rich feedback on student work.
  • Communicate with students, department staff and faculty on a regular basis and within agreed upon response timeframe.

  • Welcome, value, and nurture people of all backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, as well as support and promote an environment that accepts differences. 
  • Possess the ability to organize and present various concepts to a wide range of students with varying backgrounds and abilities, and adjust teaching techniques accordingly.
  • Manage a classroom setting in a way or manner that is acceptable and consistent with department and College objectives, guidelines, policies and practices.
  • Assume responsibility; deal effectively with problems, and exercise independent judgment when making classroom decisions.
  • Meet and collaborate with full time faculty about the outcomes and assessment for the course a minimum of once per semester. 
  • Maintain a minimum of one office hour per week and be available on an as needed basis for student questions and discussions regarding their performance.
  • Make appropriate referrals to other college personnel such as counselors, financial aid officers, and related college personnel for more specialized information.
  • Possess a strong knowledge of personal computers and educational media equipment.
  • Read, understand, and express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written form.
  • Possess strong human relations skills.  Get along with diverse personalities. 
GENERAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH OR WITHOUT A REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:
Position involves sitting and/or standing most of the time in a classroom setting.  Occasional (10-33%) repetitive motion, stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying and lifting up to 20 pounds.  Frequent (34-66%) reaching, standing, walking, lifting and grasping.  Constant (67-100%) talking, hearing and viewing various types of close work.  May travel to other on-campus facilities, off-campus facilities and businesses to teach, attend meetings, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in History with at least 18 graduate semester hours in History.
  • Substitution of experience for education is not permitted.
  • Applicants with teach experience at the post-secondary lever, preferable at a community college preferred.
SALARY
$1,160 per credit hour of instruction
