The College Board is conducting a search for an Assessment Specialist who  will join our ELA/Literacy Assessment Design and Development team to  assist in and support the development of current and new assessments and  related products. This position is resident at our Iowa City, IA  office.

Position summary

Under the  direction of the senior director, English language arts/literacy, assist  in the development of current and new assessments and related products  that support significant segments of the organization. Assist the Senior  Director in working with vendors involved in these operations and  functions. The Specialist will be accountable for the quality and  results of work in new and existing test programs; and provide expertise  on an organization-wide basis, integrating knowledge of standards,  curriculum, and assessment. Perform specific, defined functions or lead  projects related to direct writing assessment and essay scoring.

Key responsibilities

•Work as part of a team in the development of current assessments and  supporting products and services as well as the design and development  of new assessments and supporting products and services.

•Provide timely, professional feedback and assist in providing  direction to vendors contracted to provide assessment products and  services.

•Write and revise test passages or essay prompts aligned to precise  specifications, ensuring that the test materials are clear, accurate,  well-developed, well-organized, and engaging.

•Write, revise, and review essay prompts or test items and related materials aligned to precise specifications.

•Create, review, and revise test forms and related materials.

•Take part in meetings and other activities in which test passages,  essay prompts, test items, and test forms are reviewed; incorporate  feedback strategically into the selection and revision of test  materials.

•Apply a scoring rubric and assign scores to student direct writing essays consistently and accurately.

•Provide expertise in standards, instruction, curriculum, and assessment to internal and external clients.

•Keep up-to-date on trends and developments in ELA/literacy standards, instruction, curriculum, and assessment.

Minimum qualifications


This  is an entry-level position for someone with relevant experience who is  interested in exploring a career in test development. Bachelor's degree  in English, English education, writing, journalism, or closely related  field required. Master's degree preferred. A minimum of 2-3 years of  writing, editing, teaching and/or test development experience.  Experience in standardized, large-scale K-12 or K-16 assessment  preferred. Teaching experience at the middle, secondary, or  postsecondary levels preferred.
