Stage Manager, Hancher Auditorium

Hancher Auditorium is excited to bring aboard a new Stage Manager. If you have experience in production and/or presentation of a variety of performances, and managing stagehand activities, this may be your next career move!

As a full-time Stage Manager, you will serve manage events at Hancher Auditorium and other spaces, supervise and run shows presented on and off site. You are the primary contact for hourly staff and will also:

  • Schedule and run production meetings to discuss scheduling needs and event needs.
  • Schedule and program back of house doors as needed for production calls.
  • Serve as Stage Manager for performances in the auditorium including coordination with touring personnel, union and non-union technical crews, and front-of-house staff.
  • Direct and supervise student/hourly stagehands during events using non-union crews and, with the Production Manager, represent management during events using union crews.
  • Represent the interests of the University and of unit leadership in the use of resources to meet service and productivity demands within unit goals and budgets; strive to promote continual process and quality improvement.

About the Department: The Hancher is a multidisciplinary performing arts presenter committed to connecting artists and audiences with transformational artistic experiences. Since 1972, Hancher has been the cultural hub of the University of Iowa campus—presenting world-class dance, music, and theater. Along the way, Hancher has extended its reach far beyond campus, engaging thousands of Iowans each year, on campus, throughout the community, and across the state. Position Qualifications: 


  • Bachelor’s degree in technical theatre or stage management or equivalent combination of related education and experience is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • Some (6 months-1 year) experience in production and/or presentation of a variety of performances—including theatre, dance, musicals or opera, and concerts (classical and contemporary)—is required.
  • Experience (6 months-1 year) managing the activities of stagehands.
  • Experience managing events in a variety of spaces.
  • Demonstrates an EXTENSIVE proficiency level in written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work a completely flexible work schedule to accommodate performances which are presented primarily evenings and weekends.


  • Demonstrates a WORKING proficiency level in:
    • At least 3 years as a licensed driver in order to drive University vehicles.
    • Effective interpersonal skills.
    • Experience coordination artist hospitality and transportation
    • Experience working with touring productions and profession stage unions.

Work Modality: This position is primarily on-campus and may be eligible for some flexibility and remote work (i.e., events, ad hoc) in alignment with dept policies and practices. Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa and comply with the .

Compensation: $45,000-$54,000 anticipated starting annual salary. Salary will be discussed at time of interviews.
