GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:  
Under limited supervision, the library assistant will provide circulation services to patrons, assist patrons in locating and using materials and equipment, and maintain an environment conducive to study.  Duties will also include maintaining the orderly, professional appearance of library public areas, and assisting with Inter-library loan and Reserves.  This position will work Monday-Thursday evenings and will be responsible for securing and closing the library.  The hours would typically be 5:00-11:00 pm. Occasional or regular weekend shifts may also be part of the duties for this position.  May supervise student workers.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain environment conducive to study.
  • Provide evening circulation services to patrons.
  • Assist patrons in locating and using materials and equipment.
  • Secure and close library.
  • Provide friendly directional and informational help to library users as needed.
  • Maintain the orderly, professional appearance of library public areas.
  • Maintain shelf order of library collections.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Working knowledge of microcomputer, and general office and educational media equipment.
  • Ability to input, access and retrieve information from a computer for word processing and database management.
  • Ability to work efficiently and accurately in an atmosphere of frequent interruption.  Ability to prioritize.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, logically and coherently orally and in writing.
  • Working knowledge of library terminology and procedures.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Sedentary to light work.  Position involves constant (67-100%) sitting, standing and walking. Constant (67 – 100%) talking and listening to people, either in person or on the telephone. Constant (67- 100%) viewing computer screen and/or other types of close visual work.  Frequent (34-66%) stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, reaching, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping and repetitive motions.  May occasionally (10-33%) exert up to 20 pounds of force.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalency required.  Two years of work experience or two years college education or a combination of the two desired.  Library work experience desirable.
